I'm always surprised Luther and Richard were friends-anyone know the genesis of that relationship?

Richard was well known before he even had a deal, he started as a writer, he did some vocals and Lionel RIchie got hold of it and loved his voice, at the time Richard was about 17 and Lionel flew him out to LA and alot of people met Richard, one of the first things RIchard did was pen songs including the HUGE hit "what about me" with Kenny Rogers and James ingram,Kim Carnes and from their Richard sang backing on alot of records for artists, had gotten a deal and recorded a track on the "nothing in common" soundtrack in 1986 this would be major because by doing this he was disqualified from getting a Best New Artist nomination a year lllater when he had his debut with 4 top 10 hits and was basically a shoe in for the award, ironically Richard and the Grammies butted heads alot until they gave him song of the year for co writing Dance with my Father with Luther.
