Damn, I didn't know Danny Glover could barely read. His shit was just painful
I think Jimmy Jam's statement in the first video was quite prophetic considering her more recent output..."I think its interesting that she had great producers on her first two records, the records didn't really do anything. So it's...more or less, when she talks about her own ideas, and puts her own musical ideas to record, that success really happened." Paraphrase

It's obvious that had not the SB incident happened, DJ would have yielded some hits, as would 20 YO. It was a combination of America acting ridiculously stupid about a half-second flash of a nipple-shielded tit, the blacklisting by radio and MTV, and the mismanagement by Virgin that did those albums in. In the end, they still debuted at #2, and went platinum stateside or worldwide. DJ was robbed of the shine it should have gotten, because that album has some great cuts on it.
Janet's history in creating a niche for the modern-day black dance diva, and for inspiring the artists of today is set in stone. I've said it before, but she doesn't get nearly the amount of credit that she should--starting with the RnR Hall of Fame. Any way you look at it, Janet is a legend. Her music is still remade and sampled, and women are still copping her style/paying homage (Rihanna with the red Velvet Rope-era hair, Kelly Rowland in her Soul Train Awards performance from last year, Ciara in nearly every video--same for Britney, Keri Hilson in her video...) For a woman who was blacklisted by the industry for many years, she's still touring, producing and acting in films, and writing books that go to #1 on the NY Times Bestsellers List. Not bad for a woman in her 40s. "Get up off that grey line" | |
