Rihanna & Coldplay video - Racist or Respectful?

The new Rihanna & Coldplay video is a HOT MESS, if you ask me. They tossed together a bunch of Asian-y things having little to do with the song, "Princess of China". So what do you think, is it racist or is it respectful of Asian cultures?

Here's a link to the video and a little pro & con

Considering It's called Princess of China I'm guessing the video was supposed to show China, not all of Asia together so I guess it could be called racist.

Racist? No.

Culturally insensitive? Yes.

A horrible listening experience? Without question.

Although the idea of the video in general is stupid, it should have been called "Princess of Japan." rolleyes

I'd say Princess of India, Thailand, and Japan

Campy and expolitive maybe, racist no.

I think there has to be some sort of intention for the video to be racist.

It’s just Rihanna in a kung-fu movie. Get over it.

But I might have missed the really racist stuff, I couldn’t listen to more than a minute of it. The music was bad enough, but once Rihanna’s horrible autotuned warbling kicked in I started contemplating suicide.

There is so nothing "gangsta" about Rihanna. She is extremely delusional.

And honestly, this is not the first time Asian aesthetics have been used with no obvious reason other than just to be "pretty"

Why does it have to be polar opposites?

Neither?

Rihanna is just ignorant, and why should we expect otherwise from an artist such as herself?

That's what I was saying? She seems to have little input in her career.

What I meant by 'ignorant' was that she cares little/has little control over how she is portrayed, etc... in her career.

I think a duet with Coldplay is not a bad move, career wise shrug

PS. I'm NOT a fan of hers

I know you may think so, but the truth is, most of Coldplay's music is boring, lullaby, music.

so true, there's nothing "gansta" about her, except perhaps for the borderline amoral pursuit of money. but that's a problem afflicting much of the music & pop culture industry, as the post about nicki minaj and gwen stefani makes clear.

i didn't realize coldplay would also stoop this low. then again, i don't follow their career to closely, so others may have seen it coming. a collaboration between them and rihanna was a cool idea, poorly executed.

Christ. Do some people look for racism in absolutely everything in the US!?

I've watched it once and it seemed quite clear. Chris Martins character is from Japan, hence the Japanese images, and he has a thing for the Princess of China, hence all the Chinese images.

These countries used to be at war, hence the battles. Its forbidden love.

There is nothing racist here, just some people looking for it because they can't be bothered to learn or understand it.
