People are overreacting with this video, you don't have to be asian to get inspiration from there. Nor does it have to be 100 % real. I find it ironic that this is so controversial, yet the sterotypes of native americans are still allowed, you can have the face of a native american everywhere (had it been a black, asian or white face it'd be called racism) and people can use symbols from them and yet it's just a cool thing. This happens all the time, you dont need to be an asian director to make work related to asia.

Music videos can't be racist? confused

Jay-Z and Kanye. No Church In The Wild. That shit is the most racist video I have ever seen. It really made me sick.

Has it been discussed before? I've just seen the video and have no clue what you're talking about.

It's the riots video, isn't it?

No I believe it's the video where white people are slaves to black masters.

Racist? No

Politically AND Culturially incorrect? Oh hell yeah!

Think about it. This video has a black woman (never mind it's Rihanna) playing a role of a Chinese woman. WTF was Coldplay thinking when they wrote this song AND shot the video?!? It's so typical for most white people in the entertainment industry not hiring real Asians to play the role of Asian characters.

The least they could've done is hired Michelle Yeoh and let her lip sync to Rihanna's vocals in the video. THAT would have been understandable.

And honestly, this is not the first time Asian aesthetics have been used with no obvious reason other than just to be "pretty"

1. First Nicki Minaj wanted to be Lil'Kim mkII, then she wanted to be a white woman like Madonna & Lady Gaga, and now currently wish she was Asian?!? GTFO of here Nicki with that mess. disbelief Damn I miss the days when black female rap artist were proud to be black women.

Just saying. wink

2. In fairness, at least Gwen hired real Asian girls. And Gwen herself was being marketed AND promoted to crossover to hip-hop/r&b market while still being a mainstream dance-pop artist outside of the pop/rock band No Doubt.

Christ. Do some people look for racism in absolutely everything in the US!?

I've watched it once and it seemed quite clear. Chris Martins character is from Japan, hence the Japanese images, and he has a thing for the Princess of China, hence all the Chinese images.

These countries used to be at war, hence the battles. Its forbidden love.

There is nothing racist here, just some people looking for it because they can't be bothered to learn or understand it.

Does the title of Cornel West's book answered your question? lol

...and I always got the impression that Gwen Stefani genuinely found the whole Japanese Harajuku sub-culture interesting/appealing from a fashion sense using it for inspiration rather than in a stereotypical way.
