The brothers for once have managed to do something classy TOGETHER without the driving force of MJ. Looking at the set list, seeing how the brothers have managed to rearrange the songs so that they can pull this off inspite of the void MJ is leaving is very refreshing to see.

If only Randy would join them.

I wasn't sure this would work but the brothers have figured this out. MJ can never be replaced but together playing to each brothers strenght and feeding off the energy of each other they have made it work. They should have done this 25 years ago. Better late than never.

Just got in from the show. I had a FABULOUS time. The guys were really giving their all. Jermaine was a little irritated that mics weren't turned up more, but they sounded fine to me. I had second row seats right by the stage and got to shake hands with Marlon a couple of times. My only disappointment was that the show didn't sell more tickets. Most of the balcony was empty, but the first floor seemed almost full. I only decided to buy tickets at the last minute after seeing the YouTube footage and seeing some of the reviews here on the .org. And yes, I did see someone filming from the stage, so maybe we'll get a DVD out of it?

I saw a very good review for their debut show over at LSA. I'm glad to see that they are winning Orgers over w/ good shows.

Let's hope the goodness continues because these are talented cats!

Review: The Jacksons rock the Fox with memories of Motown and Michael

DETROIT -- The Jacksons may hail from Gary, Ind., and reside in southern California, but they consider Detroit "a second home," as Marlon and Jermaine told their fans on Saturday night, June 23, at the Fox Theatre.

And why not? Detroit is where the Jacksons got their big break, auditioning for and signing with Motown and even doing some preliminary recording at Hitsville USA before being relocated to Los Angeles as the vanguard of the company's westward move. That certainly gave the quartet's show at the Fox a warm, homecoming kind of feel as well as a chance for a legendary Motown act to play a theater that has such a strong place in the label's history.

But, of course, quite a bit has changed since those days, and since the Jacksons last came to the area together 28 years ago for three sold-out Pontiac Silverdome shows on the Victory Tour. Oldest brother Jackie, who missed most of that trek due to a broken leg, was on stage at the Fox, while youngest brother Randy was not. And neither, of course, was the late Michael Jackson, the force-of-nature frontman and singular super talent whose absence makes seeing the Jacksons in 2012, in any configuration, a dubious proposition.

To their credit, the Jackson 4 -- Randy, Tito, Marlon and Jermaine -- didn't run from that 800-pound gorilla. Michael was an unavoidable presence in the repertoire, which packed truncated versions of 26 songs into the show's 90 minute, and on the video screen. The brothers acknowledged him a few times during the evening, even noting where he should be standing on stage, and Jermaine, who took most of Michael's lead vocal parts, performed an emotional rendition of his "Gone Too Soon" accompanied by a montage of historic photos and videos.

And to their further credit, the Jacksons still managed to pull off an entertaining and clearly crowd-pleasing nostalgia trip even without Michael, traipsing through a dozen years of recordings -- from the first Jackson 5 hits in 1970 to Michael's "Thriller" album in 1982 -- in a manner closer to a slick, high-end nightclub show than a stadium spectacle.

Backed by a tight nine-piece group -- including three backup singers that did a lot of the harmonic heavy lifting (especially when the brothers' vocals were curiously low in the mix) -- the Jacksons played to both the casual fans and the aficionados, reaching into their catalog for "deep cuts" such as "Wanna Be Where You Are," "Show You the Way to Go," "Looking Through the Window," "Time Waits For No One," "Push Me Away" and "Man of War" alongside hit fare like "Blame It on the Boogie," "Lovely One" and "This Place Hotel." The early Motown era got its due, too, though the brisk medley of "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save," "Never Can Say Goodbye," "All I Do Is Think of You" and "I'll Be There" felt a bit like a kiss-off -- especially when more time was devoted to Jermaine's three-song set of solo favorites ("Dynamite," "Let's Get Serious" and "Do What You Do").

The Jacksons also delved into Michael's solo catalog, covering the likes of "Rock With You," "Can't Let Her Get Away," "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" -- accurately if not spectacularly. And the show-closing "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" remained a party-in-a-song gem whose extended vamp provided a reminder of just how fierce a stage act the Jacksons put on back in the proverbial Day.

Where the Unity show heads from here remains to be seen. There's talk of more touring, a live album and DVD, even brand new music from the quartet. But on this one night in a "second home," the Jacksons presented memories that were durable and sweet, and with beats that, yes, you could dance to without reservation.

The Jackson's rocked the Fox theater last night. I was blown away when they sang 'Man Of War'. Jermaine handled most of the leads, with Jackie covering the high parts on most songs. Jermaine played Dynamite, Let's Get Serious and Do What You Do as a solo set within the show. Tito did most of his talkling with his guitar and that was fantastic, though he surprised the hell out of me with an incredible falsetto. There were lots of families in attendance. People were crying when they did their tribute to Michael. Afterward they signed autographs and hi-fived about 100 people who were waiting backstage. I yelled out "TITTTO" when they came out and it SHOCKED the hell out of me when he came over and spoke with our group. AWESOME show. I suppose people will say it's not the same without Michael, but Michael is gone from this life now and they still as the J4 had more than enough to entertain us and most importantly they handled his absence with respect and class. Great show all around. I can't wait for the new Jam and Lewis produced album. They filmed the entire show and the fan mob afterward so hopefully footage will come out at some point. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a new era for them. Jermaine and Tito have some serious skills

They're working with Jam & Lewis? I didn't know that. Jimmy Jam said something recently about working with New Edition and a teen group called The RoneyBoys. Jimmy & Terry did appear on the TV show the brothers did a few years ago.

Yes that would be great! Their selections of songs seem really good, I'm wondering if they have any plans of coming over to Europe? I hope so! Sounds like they've done something great this time around

This doesn't even remind of a MJ solo tour setlist...even the MJ solo songs are well picked. Can't let her get away is a very big surprise and something MJ probably wouldn't perform himself and the songs from Off the Wall and Thriller are songs The Jacksons have performed live before. Jermaine's rendition of Gone too soon is a nice tribute and it would be weird if they didn't recocgnize MJ in any way.

This tour is well put together and well directed. It has the obvious J5 hits, The Jacksons classics like Can you feel it, a Jermaine Jackson solo segment, some of MJ's hits but also more obscure J5 songs as well as Jacksons songs, one obscure MJ song and a nice tribute to their brother (Gone to soon) and even a little tribute to Janet. Overall this tour is much more RnB, soul, funk and nostalgia flavoured than MJ's more hit based last tours.

I love that they're including Man of War,it's such a great song. Surprising that they've chosen can't let her get away. Sounds like a good show to me and not a MJ tribute show. It would be a Mj tribute show if they just sang his songs and dedicated the whole set to Mike. I appreciate that they're honoring their own music and Mikes.

I dont know about the other places that got canceled... but they said in D.C. the show got canceled because the tickets werent saling... maybe thats the real reason why the shows got canceled. But happy they got good reviews, looks like it was a good show.

Otherwise they have orchestrated this tour to the best of their ability at their current age IMO. They could never make it even close as good as if MJ would be a part but they sure have done it a lot better than I thought they would be able to as I see it.

I thought those songs were scrapped. The way the show was edited, it looked like nothing was completed. But they might have been, because it wouldn't be a good idea to have the finished songs shown on a TV show where people could have easily copied them. I wonder if Jam & Lewis are doing the whole album.

A couple of other points:

They were selling autographed tour books for $50. They later signed some posters and albums fans had outside the theater. I compared the signatures and they were all signed with the same type of silver sharpie and the sigs matched up so that was really cool to verify that they had in fact personally signed the stuff on sale in the lobby.

The guys looked good. As a dude, I hate to mention this, but standing face to face with Jermaine, I had to give dude prop. He's older than me and he looked great. Probably 15 years younger than he actually is.

Groupies were everywhere. The fellas still draw beautiful women.

It felt good to 'shovel the funk' again with Marlon Jackson.

When I entered the lobby and saw the t-shirts with the four brother's name, but not Michael. It was like a puch in the gut. I know Mike is gone, but to see the brothers' names, but not his was kind of sad. I didn't expect to feel that sense of loss like that. I guess that's why they had to do the tribute to Michael. Maybe it's a way to let the audience let that feeling out.

Jam and Lewis may not be producing the entire album. I shoudn't have phrased it that way. My understanding though is that they are working on material for a new J5 studio record.

Yes I agree, but they had plans to do shows in Dallas 2010, but since Mike died that changed. Randy is being 2 much, he should just join the brothers and honor Mike...

It seems like they've done a good job, I mean afterall these guys havent done much since the 80s (and the anniversary show in 2001)so I'll give them respect for at least trying to do something decent. Obviously they cant compare their shows to Mikes, he's one of the greatest live entertainers ever.

Maybe Randy isn't really interested in performing, like Michael Nesmith isn't.

Which songs do you think they did most justice? What did you enjoy most?
