At what point did BET start to suck?

Going through my old tapes of videos last night I noticed something. My tape from 94-95 reminded me that BET was still for "grown folk" then. They were running videos from Mint Condition, Low Key, Silk, Barry White, Stevie Wonder, Portrait,Incognito, Prince, Brand New Heavies, and the like. On top of that I noticed "Video Vibration's with El Cap-e-tan" and "Video Soul with Donnie Simpson" was still on daily. At what point did BET become the network for lil bow wow and the jr high school set?

the moment comercialism became more important than the song.
when your apperance becomes more important than your talent the music industry itself was dead. the day rappers became known as musicians and singers when its only spoken poetry.

Hell that happened in the 80's but that didn't mean the end of music for grown folk. I'm just trying to figured out what caused the shift to the 21 and under record buyer. I know music has always been directed at teens but it just seemed back then that the people making music and hosting music shows were mid 20's and up.

916 yes rap was the end of music 4 grown ups. no more songs of love, replaced by songs of bling. thugatry ran the radio air waves and video channels, if real music is not played on radio 916 chances are most of it wont b heard.some guys like rasheed patterson mint condition and even prince music got caught up in the web of tenie bop. even the lyrics have changed, guys 2 thugish 2 write of love.all this happen right when rap exploded. sad but true. and your friends at bet only follow the paths of radio and untalented ceo's of record companies who not only wont sign bands but expect the the rappers 2 act like thugs in videos. marvin gaye and duke turning over in there graves with this mess being called music controling air waves and video channels.we are in a sad state and it aint getting no better..

But people like you and I are still here and we have more money to spend than some 14 year old kid. So where is our outlet for music and videos? And please don't say VH1. Someone is really missing the boat because there is a gang of money to be made out there by filling this gap. I only wish I had 100-200 mil.

i guess a radio station and a video channel that focused on real music[like in the day]could make some good money now days, and i cant see why someone wont pick up on groups of people like us and cash in, cause i know there are tons of us out here

Fortunately for me, here in Chicago, we have VH-1 Soul. All grown folks videos all the time with no commercials.
