Family Guy season finale comes on in like 10 mins, so I might miss Whitney tribute.

They used to be on in December to coincide with the end of the calendar year, because therir charts worked the same way. Ther charts are still measured on a calendar year basis, but when the Oscars decided to move up from the end of March to the end of February, it pushed all of the other awards shows back. So the Grammys moved from the end of February to the middle of that month, and the American Music Awards went from mid-January to the weekend just before Thanksgiving. The Billboard Music Awards still aired in December for a couple of years after the big switch, but a lot of artists bailed on the awards show because of the glut of other commitments, so they decided to air the show in May to avoid the deluge of other awards shows.

Actually it wasn't. The Hot 100 song of the year does consist of airplay, and Adele was the most played artist on the radio last year. But that "Party Rock Anthem" won primarily on digital download sales.
