Stevie Wonder To Be Honored with the Billboard Icon Award

Stevie Wonder will be honoured with the Billboard Icon Award for his achievements in music.

The soul music legend will be the second person to receive the trophy, presented at the Billboard Music Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on May 20.

Neil Diamond was the first person to receive the trophy in 2011.

The news comes after the 'Superstition' singer performed for US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at an exclusive 'Performance at the White House' concert this week.

Stevie remains a popular force in modern pop music, recently appearing on Pixie Lott's second album 'Young Foolish Happy'. Meanwhile, Alexandra Burke said she'd love to ask him for tips on soul music, and singer and songwriter Emeli Sande would love to write a song with him.

She said: "There are so many people I want to work with. I would love to write for someone legendary like Stevie Wonder."

The Billboard Icon Award replaced the Billboard Century Award which had been given to performers like Annie Lennox, Sting and Billy Idol.

Adele is the frontrunner at the Billboard awards with nominations in 18 categories including Top Artist. LMFAO follow her with 17, whilst Rihanna is up for 13 awards.

I co-sign this. Billboard and all these award show are so damn tacky. Stevie should have been first to get that award... but they give it to some guy I've never heard of. Something tells me if Stevie looked like Justin Bieber, he would've gotten this award in no time.

Exactly. They're just creating these repetitious awards for ratings. Point blank. Period. nod

You don't know Neil Diamond?

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Editorial Reviews

FOREVER NEIL DIAMOND

Classic covers of Neil’s best songs

"Neil Diamond." To many, the name evokes bright lights, stage costumes that would make Elvis jealous, and legions of female fans in the audience. But there’s another Neil Diamond—Neil the songwriter. That’s the Neil that producer Rick Rubin chose to highlight on the recent 12 Songs album, and it’s telling that while Rubin recorded covers with artists such as Johnny Cash, with Neil he stuck solely to original material.

The new collection Forever Neil Diamond presents 14 of the best and most popular covers of classic Neil Diamond songs, including UB40’s #1 smash recasting of "Red Red Wine," Urge Overkill’s memorable version of "Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon" from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, Deep Purple’s hard-rock take on "Kentucky Woman," and even Elvis Presley himself paying tribute to Neil’s songwriting prowess with the cult favorite "And The Grass Won’t Pay No Mind." The result is a fun and engaging look at the real Neil—Neil the songwriter.

Neil wrote this:

Here's a couple of his most popular songs:
