Sorry ur offended, but it is what it is. Hate it or love it. I lived it for ten years and what I saw and know is that seeing women as sex objects is apart of the culture. The young and old men think like that. Yes Jamaican culture is great, but that sex thing or mentality they have about is just the way it is. Just stating what I lived.
So you're applying your experience to every single one of us? I can see this conversation has hurt ur feelings and offended u so I'm sorry for that, but I can't change my experience and that is what I know to be true. I know ur young so I don't wanna argue with you. If ur offended I apologize, but that won't change my feelings. |

I know that there are a lot that the world thinks about Black Americans as a whole but I don't hold it to be true because I know that you cannot judge a whole group of people based on what you think you know. But before I get angry, lash out, and say something to you that I'll regret, I'm going to hold my tongue because I genuinely like you and don't want to ruin anything. But, if anything, I will say that this is the most offended and upset someone has made me in a while.
So, on that note... |

The only one that is not like that is Damien ironically his the most talented. I dont think he has any kids or a girl at the moment...pity cause his sexy and is an intellectual.
Damian lives with his girlfriend in Pinecrest...a posh Miami suburb. She's a beautiful Trini and they have a little boy, Elijah. He's also rumored to have an older son in London, (don't know if that's true), but seldom sees other chicks and is very discreet when he does.
He is by far the most talented IMO. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. |

Maybe it's easy to see what happened to Lauryn; She couldn't live up to her image. Her songs were really smart, but in her real life she couldn't even resist a married man or fight the temptation to have kids with him out of wedlock. Now she put that image out to the world and she was being praised for it.
I remember an interview where she admitted that she couldn't live up to the image she created. In the song "Doo Wop (That Thing)",she's giving all this good advice to young women, but it's advice that she herself wasn't following.
Oh yeah, I forgot the topic...
I think that all of it came too quickly and easily for her in the beginning and she couldn't handle it. It happens to a lot of people who are not really grounded with a good sense of self. She seemed to have a good idea of who she wanted to be but not who she really was and got lost trying to get from A to B. That could be why she sought refuge in Mr. Marley and saw only what she wanted to see instead of seeing reality.
It's amazing how many women still think they can hold on to a man by having kids.
It seems pretty common that very artistic types don't deal well with the practical side of life. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. |

There are a lot of Indians in Trinidad, nearly half the population, so I am not surprised about that.
That must have been the same tour because he played in Trinidad with Nas too and with Jah Cure and that show was in December 2010. He wanted to drag me there . He loved it. But it was a drive for 3 hours to get there and it took place in a huge stadium and a whole lot of bands were playing so it lasted for probably at least 10 hours. And I had seen Jah Cure before live and was not that impressed. So I finally decided to skip it. And I was happy I did not go in the end because on the way home the road was blocked by some fallen down tree and my boyfriend was stuck in his car on the road until lunchtime next day.

Yeah I am pretty happy too that a lot of cool artists play in my hometown. Even though I have no idea if any Marley ever played here or not . I also travelled to a lot to other countries for concerts back in the day, but only for my favourite artists.
That concert in Port Of Spain was a must see for everybody, not many famous artists are playing there even though in the same month a lot was happening in that country with Beyoncé and Maroon5 playing there too . *I* hear ya! It's no coinky dink that the term "babymama/babymother" and "babydaddy/babyfather" is an import from the Caribbean. So too were the things most boldly sexual in hip hop. They were imports from da dancehall (and even then we are VERY conservative compared to the original). IOW, "slackness" is very real....they ain't just talkin' on records!
Tho I'm Black American, Caribbean culture interests me. What you're saying is very much apart of the cultural landscape on many of the islands, esp Jamaica.
If anybody doubts what nursev is saying, go to YT and look up "passa passa" That's how tons of Jamaicans of all classes get down every weekend!
[Edited 5/16/12 13:35pm]
Thank u for this and every word is true. I remember going to reggae parties back in the 90's and hearing the "babymama" term in dancehall songs and after that everybody was saying it-so u are correct. I also witnessed a lot of things occur at those parties that folks wouldn't believe being overtly sexual is apart of the culture. I know-I lived it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Jamaican men are bad. I'm saying that mentality of wanting to fuck every thing moving is just what they do Folks can say I'm wrong, but I'm not
I lived in Miami and went to college with Jamaicans, later I lived and worked amongst them, and I'm sorry I gotta back Nurse up on this one. I also have traveled or done work trips to nearly every island in the Carribean barring Cuba, and the openess toward sexuality in the English language islands is off the charts , esp. in Jamaica. Hell, I was even in little bitty ass Anguilla once and at 2 o'clock in the afternoon the radio was playing music about oral sex and eating people out! My American puritanical ass was clutching my pearls much to the bemusement of the islanders working omfg:production; folks asked me straight up "what's wrong, you don't like to go downtown!?"
Mind you this was a professional environment and these were supposed to be my work colleagues for the trip.Next they were saying they wanted to fix me up with people and wanted to know how big did I need the penis to be since I was slender. Hot messes of sex, I tell you!
Beyond that, I've watched enough girlfirneds from afar go through trials and tribulations with their Jamaican men. Fidelity and/or honesty about their marital statuses and true number of offspring hasn't really been their collective strong suit |

Maybe the attitude in Rasta culture is more relaxed about dudes having multiple partners? Or maybe Caribbean culture in general because I hear the same stories about Trinis, Bahamians, etc, etc.

When I was in Trinidad I was approached by men who were in relationships all the time. For example there was that guy who was 22 or something who asked me if that man overthere was his boyfriend and when I said yes told me his name and and age and how beautiful I am, but that he can only see me 2 times a week because of the wife and the kids from another relationship . Then the song "Everytime you need a lover call on me" started to play from a car near by and he dedicated it to me and did not get it at all that I just walked away shaking my head. And his friend tried too at the same time . So Ottensen's experience probably is pretty typical.
And then the dancing there: wining is pretty much sex with clothes on and everybody dances with everybody (the ladies approach the men a lot too) and I seem to be the only one who doesn't want to feel a stranger's penis rubbing on me ..... I think that is true. On the other hand no woman will be topless on a beach like here in Europe and my boyfriend sees that as not okay. And anal sex is illegal in Trinidad as far as I know and considered a sin by most Rastas.
And the Caribbean culture is wonderful in many ways, I agree with that [Edited 5/19/12 15:09pm] With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be!
