If we're speaking strictly of him covering specific songs originally by black artists; tons of artists cover another artist's song and make it a huge hit.. it may suck for the original artist, but Elvis was not the only person to do it; and it wasn't only black artists whose songs he sung.
But some people complain about white people performing genres of music that were created by black artists, and I find that quite offensive..
It comes from a fear that they will eventually become the best selling and most celebrated of the genre and that we, the original buyers, will be left in the dust. |

Just curious.. is it his singing that you don't like, or you just don't like his music at all? Most people it seems can't stand him because of his voice..
Well, I guess it´s his voice and performance because I like the covers I heard from his songs.
And I can´t recall the title but whenever I hear an older song of him, I´m still surprised they announce it it a Dylan song. And 2 be honest, compare his voice with Stevie´s and..well, I prefer the soul But no disrespect, I know Dylan is a great songwriter and he deserves more credit than Elvis (OVERrated!!!!!!!!!!) But Elvis is not a songwriter. They can not be compared, they are totally different. Elvis - a handsome man with a good voice. This is his niche in music. It is a huge icon in the first place.
Although in agreement, he is extremely overrated. |

btw, please don't take my defending Elvis about the race thing as a sign that I'm a huge fan... I'm not. I think he has about a dozen classic songs, and maybe about 50 good ones... but he did a lot of terrible music, especially in the 1960s when he did soundtrack after soundtrack.. he definitely isn't one of the best artists ever. |

Dylan does NOT deserve more credit than Elvis. Dylan is a fraud. The original "Dylan" was Woody Guthrie. Bob Dylan stole Woody Guthries style- the only reason it worked is that Dylan had the image and Woody Guthrie didn't. Bob Dylan was handsome and Woody Guthrie was ugly but Guthrie was the origanl and Dylan is the rip off. I used to be a Dylan fan until I realized that he never did any of the things he sings about; he never worked on Maggie's farm, he didn't have the hard knock life he sings about; Woody Guthrie did. Dylan is a thief, he even says in his book that the way he wrote his songs was to get the newspaper and read about things that happened to OTHER people and he would write a song about it, which I suppose is a craft in itsself but he's not the real deal. |

I'm actually shocked that everyone is so befuddled by my Dylan comments. Isn't it obvious? After I started listening to Woody Guthrie and saw a documentary on his life, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought it was obvious to everyone. I even heard Joni Mitchell say pretty much the same thing about Dylan a few years ago and I thought, "Well, SHE gets it"
I'm just surprised so many people don't see it.
Hell, even if you read Dylan's OWN book , you see right away, how much he stole from others, especially Woody Guthrie. |

If I recall, he did admit to stealing stuff from other people's songs. Still, his music is great regardless of how much he came up with.. tons of artists have stolen lyrics, melodies, etc from others.. and your sentence about Dylan becoming popular because he was 'handsome' is really funny.. I've never heard anyone say that before.
As for this sentence:
I used to be a Dylan fan until I realized that he never did any of the things he sings about; he never worked on Maggie's farm, he didn't have the hard knock life he sings about
..why would I care if he lived what he sang? Do you think Prince [or whoever else] lives everything they sing about?
My favorite artist is John Lennon.. he stole from other people on multiple occasions and was called a hypocrite because of "Imagine".. but it doesn't stop me from loving the music he made - why would it?

Well, because if I'm relating to someone's lyrics, it's because I want to at least think that they actually "LIVED" them or at least came up with the idea on their own, not stole them from someone else. And yes, Dylan did what Woody Guthrie did but I think, did get more attention because he had the whole package, he was handsome and looked good singing his stolen songs whereas Woody Guthrie was ugly but at least his songs were written because of things that had happened to him, they were things he "FELT" and things he had actually been through. Have you read "Bound for Glory?" poor guy- he had a helluva life. Bob Dylan's a faker. And I said that writing songs that he stole from other peoples life experiences is a craft in itself so I will give him that. But he is NOT the real deal. It's like when that dumbass singer, Plum, (I think her name was) wrote some song about cutting because she thought it was really "deep" and that the young cutters would relate and then the teenagers were calling her on it it, like, "You're not a cutter, why are you writing a song about it if you don't cut?" Ok- I'm probably rambling, but you see what I'm saying.. anyway, fuck Bob Dylan. LOVE Woody Guthrie, may he R.I.P. |

I've never been big on Diana Ross & the Surpremes. I find them dull. Never digged Diana's solo work either.
Aretha's best work was in the 60s, everything is meh. With the exception of Amazing Grace.
As someone mention ealier, all of the white rock bands. Rock music is just a bunch of screaming to me. Pink Floyd, Zeplin, Queen, Nirvana, etc are all . |

Oh hell no. Diana can't sing AT ALL.
There goes that theory that back in the day you actually had to SING good to be successful. Berry wanted her little weak ass voice so the white folks would like it. Gotta make that money honey. |
