If you're not taught good music, how do you know the difference? I taught my 18 yr old son that good music is not defined by race or genres. If the music is good, it doesn't matter what artist made it If you like it that's all that matters. Most think that young Black men only listen to rap music-not true. My son listens to rap, pop, R & B, jazz, whatever floats his boat. He can listen to Grand Master Flash,Greenday,Adele (hate the heffa ) , Wu Tang, Jay Z, Kanye and still enjoy Prince's instrumentals. Trust I taught my handsome son well.

He can take it from Kanye's Twisted Fantasy to Prince's News to Adele's 21 ( ) He's not influenced by what momma listens to, but he can appreciate a good song. My parents are more liberated. They like newer stuff too. My mom goes nuts over 50 Cent just because she thinks 50 is cool with his raps. She has no idea about how 50 is but she liked him after watching his movie and hearing some of his songs (like "Hate It or Love It") and my dad is always taping videos of current artists (not Lil Wayne or Drake but songs he digs that has a dance beat, like some Lil Jon songs he like). Of course they still love songs from their childhood. They're a reason why my music picks are all over the place. Same with my brother.

I'm like that with my son Believe it or not he has taught me about some good artist like J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar. He introduced me to Wiz Khalifa and Nicki Minaj before anybody knew who they were I even posted an early song from Nicki and the Org was like "this chick is whack" and then she blew up Yeah my baby teaches his mom too and he enjoys my old school music too. I got him listening to the "quiet storm" oldies at night

Right. Music is like something you can't dictate to. We do have the compunction to turn something off if we don't like it unless we ride on the car and someone plays it. Like my cousin plays nothing but rap, some wack, some good, some real good. I love it though because I found there's always something enjoyable about it. Oddly he doesn't listen to the radio anymore and sometimes I end up getting the stuff he has because it's actually decent stuff and it does not suck. There's some Lil Wayne songs I like for instance before he went all doped up on syrup.

All I have to say is that music has not changed for better for worse. It's just changed. Typically once a person makes their musical tastes, they don't develope anymore and a person perceives their music as the best. I'm sure if Mozart was alive in the 1960's-80's he'd hate the greatest music there was. then there's the kids who like solely the old stuff. Usually it means either the kid has different tastes then other kids or they have grown up listening to the old music. Then there's people like me who can enjoy something in nearly every generation.

Everything has been in some shapre or form musically. So no one is going to be 100 percent original anymore & even the greats lke Bowie & Prince make bland, commercial or uninspired albums to from time to time.

naw. for each period there is good and bad. some may look back at the 70s which i'd say was the best musical period, and look fondly on miles, santana, ledzep, stones, etc, but if you look at the charts it was full of utter shit like chirpy chirpy cheep cheep and the fucking osmonds and boney m. just like todays charts which are similarly full of shite. but if you delve a bit deeper you will find great people making great albums. like janelle monae, robert glasper, the roots, alabama shakes, etc etc etc

it's like with most things, if you sit back and accept what is forced onto you, then you will listen to shit. but do a bit of delving and you find great stuff
