worship Simply Beautiful ... can't be touched. Al had the gift of giving a one syllable word and making it a three syllable. Nobody can touch that.

Superstition - Stevie Wonder or Stevie Ray Vaughan. Again, you may get the idea that I dislike Stevie Ray, that's not the case at all. I just think these covers were done best in the hands of the authors. None of Stevie Ray's covers (that I've heard) leave a bad taste in my mouth, I just prefer the originals. I don't want to hear anybody cover his "Riviera Paradise" either. Well, maybe only a couple of living guitarists could do it justice. biggrin

I just started recognizing Stevie Ray Vaughn's guitar playing style a few years ago. "Riviera Paradise" is wonderful. Over seven minutes of instrumental heaven. Which living guitarists were you thinking of?
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

Just My Imagination - The Temptations or Prince (LIVE). The Tempts couldn't play geetar like THAT! I was stunned when I heard Prince's version for the first time, and to this day I am still stunned. Sometimes Prince makes his guitar talk. This time he made it cry. That arrangement was out of left field, and it stuck to my ribs. This is one of those songs that makes not only believers, but non-believers realize how special Prince is. I always respected the Tempts' version, but I'm in awe of Prince's interpretation. His tears were in that performance. So were mine.

DAMN, Nova, you got me wanting to break that shit out right now... cry

I have to point out for anybody who doesn't know; there are 2 different live versions of the song by Prince that I've heard. One is just OK, to me. The other one, he was in THE ZONE. He was absolutely on fire and raised the roof. It smokes.

One is Jeff Beck. Who has such a dynamic touch, and so much range, he astounds me the more I get into his music. The other; Prince - IF he actually CARES and has some affinity for the piece. He'd have to really be FEELING IT or some otherworldly spirit. Do you get what I mean? When Prince is ON there aren't too many who can f*** with him. There's a certain feel and touch that a guitarist has to have to pull "Riviera Paradise" off.

Luther Vandross is one of the few artists who can do a remake and make it sound BETTER than the original...

Except for his and Mariah Carey's version of "Endless Love"... Oh, it was horrible. Why did they even bother? There was no touching the original on that one!

disbelief

I agree! In fact, surprisingly enough,Luther's entire album of remakes 'Songs'(1994) was really disappointing. On this album,he simply picked too many songs that didn't really need updating (such as Heatwave's "Always And Forever" and of course,"Endless Love").I think it works best when he does only ONE remake on his regular albums,as opposed to doing a whole collection of them. That's odd, isn't it?

Everytime his version of "Always and Forever" comes on the radio, my immediate reflex is to go to the radio and change the station. I can't stand it!!! I think any remakes of his post '90 are questionable at best and awful at worse. He's had a career of remakes, but for some reason the last batch or two rubbed my ears the wrong way.

I agree. On his most recent album,he does a remake of Ronnie Milsap's "Any Day Now" and it's not too bad,but I think in the 80s,his remakes were much better although I can't really explain why.Maybe he just chose better songs to remake?

Yesss! Man, they had balls to cover that song to great effect. How about these:

Walk on By: The Stranglers version of the Bacarach classic.
Don't Make Me Over: Another Bacarach classic that Sybil covered.
If You Want Me to Stay: The Chili Pepper's version of Sly's last gem.
Under the Bridge: All Saints butchered that song.
White Lines: The Duran/Grandmaster Flash collaboration. It was pretty cool.
Twist & Shout: I always thought that song to be one of the Beatles own until I heard the Isley's original version.
Guns of Navarrone: The Specials' live version of that puts the Skatalites original one to so much shame.
NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.
