No Other Female Pop Star Had an Era as Big as Whitney Houston in 92/93? people were discussing this yesterday and someone mention that still to this day no other female artist had an era as huge as Whitney's bodyguard era. apparently u couldn't go no where without hearing her songs, the movie was a massive success and had loads of press, the soundtrack was huge. my mom said my dad threw the radio out the window of their apartment after hearing i will always love you for the 20th time in a day I was just a baby back then so i don't exactly remember but do you guys agree?

Outside of the country-crossover of Come On Over, nope...probably not. The Bodyguard was perhaps the biggest era. I wouldn't even put the explosion of Britney in 99 in the same category since there was no movie attached.
Add the movie, the accompanying soundtrack, the radio dominance, the awards and Whitney's pretty tough to beat.

Yep. Doesnt Whitney have the most award of any female pop singer? Cant beat that and all well deserved. Love you Whitney, R.I.P. angel.

Indeed, Rest In Peace Ms. Houston.

well...I used 2 hate her songs back in the day. Geeez..if people think Adele is overplayed is becuz they forgot that Whitney's era. I used 2 cringe everytime I listened 2 "I will Always Love you"...it took me 15 years 2 go back to that album 2 appreciate it...anyways, I don't think it has her best songs.

I was three, four, and five years old during the Bodyguard's run. I remember going with my mom to the hair-dresser and the tracks from the album playing constantly it's actually one of the earliest memories I have.

Yeah that run was intense. At a time when Janet was starting to spread her wings so to speak and Madonna had her initial bad period and the transitions of Mariah and Celine, Whitney definitely had a huge run between 1992 and 1994.

You are so right. Hell, Madonna shunned off so many mainstream fans around that time. She had done the "Sex" book and had videos where she was wearing gold teeth and exploring her s&m side. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

The song was everywhere too, even in TV shows like Full House
I would argue that Like a Virgin was a huge one too though alongside True Blue....right?
And maybe Titanic [Edited 4/26/12 11:07am]

I'd say Madonna 85-87 was pretty massive, but I have better memories of Bodyguard Whitney era.

Hmm... now grant it i was born in 90 so i have VAGUE memories of these eras
But what about Mariahs fantasy era? i mean One Sweet day was number 1 like 18 weeks, Fantasy was number 1 forever to & the video was played a ton. And she started doing remixes around this time to & just from what i heard she fucked up 95
Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

It would have been cool to really experience a huge era from certain artists
Personally from being 21 right now.... the only really BIG eras of an album just being so big u could NOT escape it..... that ic an remember.
The first was probably Confessions, That album & the songs where beyond everywhere , you could not escape them from 04-05. Outkasts Speakerbox/The love below And now Adele 21
And eh sure i can throw GaGa in cause The Fame & Fame monster where un escaple for about 2 years
Other then that i can't think of any really big eras from recent years. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

1. Biggest selling album by a female artist (Come on no one bought this album unless they wanted Whitney) 2. One of the most successful songs ever 3. Commercially successful movie 4. Grammy's 5. Didn't she get an Oscar?
Definetly the biggest era for any female star.

Hmmm yeah i guess when you take ALL that in to count to.
Mariah & Madonna nor Janet where racking in oscars Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Not a worldwide phenomenon as far as I'm aware. Mariah was big internationally in the 90s but nowhere near on the scale she was in the US. 92-93 Whitney was pretty much consistently massive everywhere.

She already did Sex and Erotica, why did she have to go off and do this horrible movie? She would have been better off releasing the making of Sex to theaters.

True, Whitney has always had some of best success outside the U.S Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

And Norah Jones, silently sold 15 million records in the decade, 2002,2003 with "Come Away with me" its pretty unbeatable, because she did it with no real major hit like the others had "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I'd say the last pop cultural artist was Lady Gaga, not Adele. Adele's got huge sales but then so did Celene Dion and none of her records were momumental cultural events.
In the UK, every few years or so someone comes alone like Adele. Safe, predicable, inoffensive but talented. I've heard it dubbed "coffee table music" as artists like her and Dido in the Uk before her, are the type of artists where the general public, who only buy an album once a year and as a gift for their friends, will buy someone like Adele. Only difference this time is, kids are buying her aswell as middle class, middle aged housewives etc....
..Iam surprised Adele has caught on so big in the US, but the same sorta rules apply.
As for females pop stars, I agree with Whitney on a worldwide basis, but if we are talking about any pop star, then Elvis breaking out in the 1950's and The Beatles coming to the US had much bigger impacts in their respective era's. Shit, even MC Hammer's year of reign around 1990-1991 is up their too. Everyone and their grandma knew "You cant touch this". Single might not of been a number one but the track was a phenomenom no question, as was the video and as was the Hammer.

No, Whitney did not get an Oscar. I know Run to You and I Have Nothing were nominated for an Oscar, but they lost. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

And David Foster and Diane Warren were up for the awards. Whitney hardly wrote anything.
