So does anyone else notice a preference in gender when it comes to their music choices.

I don't hae a musical preference for male or female singers. If I like the song, I like it and I don't think, "I wish a male or female were singing this!" LOL. I have no way of knowing which I have the most of in my collection without devoting an inordinate amout of time to researc. My guess, however, will be that I have more female singers than male. Donna Summer being at the top of the heap. Glad to see her so high on your list:) Hope you purchased the new rap song featuring Donna by O'Mega Red. Yet another genre she has tackled.

I started listening to Donna Summer in the mid-70's after all the attention 'Love to Love You' garnered. Loved the voice. 'Winter Melody,' 'Spring Affair' still get airplay from me.

Haven't heard that new collaboration but I will seek it out.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Is there more male music?

Yes. Most industries are male dominated. This is a man's world.

Yep, like women's sports don't get the same amount of coverage. Nor do female athletes get the same amount of pay or commerial endorsements, except in a few cases like the Williams sisters. Action stars tend to be male too, although in Hong Kong martial arts movies there are a few women who are the main stars of a film.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I get that, but I wonder if my collection would be as large if were female-centric? Presumably there women with sizeable collections of material.

As far as preference goes, I don't think I have one. But I will say that I find female vocalists to be better overall singers.

At the moment I'm listening to more male singers. There aren't a lot of females in Funk music. lol

Depends on the genre. With R&B/Soul etc I listen to more females. With Latin Music, mostly female (unless we're talking reggaeton, spanish hip-hop, or bachata, then its almost all male), most of my pop/rock music is predominantly female. Any type of hyper, aggressive or loud music is mostly male (because I primarily listen to that to go to the gym and high testosterone music gets my adrenaline pumping better).

Change it one more time..

This!

I find that women are better singers than men and much more expressive. I also find that the music industry is overwhelmengly dominated by men. Thus not surprising that men are mostly the main supporters of women bashing songs.

I'm pretty much right down the line with male/female. Last time I made a list of my top 100 artists, I think it came to 52 to 48.

I guess it changes over time for me. While I have no preference, I tend to listen to a little more male than female but then again it rotates.

Preference no.

Reality? 95% of my collection is men. Women just don't make the type of music that I LOVE.

I just like good music and good lyrics. I don't care if its a man or woman singing it as long as the song suits them and is something I can either dance to, cry to, reminisce or get by to.

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

I'd say my music collection is two thirds women or bands fronted by women. It's even more lopsided when it comes to albums released after 2000--perhaps 90/10 in favor of women. It's rare that I give male vocalists the time of day now. Men singing generally bore me.

I think I have a preference for female singers if I'm only thinking about it. counting it might reveal summin else. I think it kind a 60/40 split though. Nothing to overwhelming. I tend to get this feeling like they're singing to me. I also get a sense that I'm catching a glimpse into the female mind and it gives me an inside track as to how they operate. In the rock & rap worlds, It's almots strictly dudes. But I listen to a lot if pop and alt as well....women rule that roost for me. Love songs/r&b usually chicks...I ain't having a dude sing to me about love...go away usher, go away levert, u vs stay Mr Barry...go away lionel richie...prince is a strange exception and I think its cuz there's many other schticks he has to listen to than love dittys, also cuz I share very similar sentiments as him in my love life.

Anyways...I feel like its 60/40 but it may be fifty fifty or the opposite. I definately get the feeling I listen to a lot more female artists than my friends.

I can not say that I originally chose the artists by sex, but I prefer rock music usually. This style dominated by men.

In general, I more often listen to men, the ratio of around 80/20. In the top 100 of my favorite artists will be no more than 12-15 women, and I doubt that there is at least one girl in the top 10, to be honest.

Ahhhh

I don't see it that way. I see myself singing to someone else.

Like 'Adore.' It would be singing it to someone. Even if I'm single and listening to it.

Same for other male artists.

I guess that perception can be impactful. Considering that I'm gay, I still never saw it as them singing to me. hmmmm.

Male or female I tend to like a little drama contrasting and punching between the vocal performance and the music ... like this one by Marvin that leaves you a little bloody. saw Love this thread.

This is an EXCELLENT thread. Uve got me really thinking about some shit.

I have always felt like I had more of a "girly" music library than most of my friends. I developed a semi-complex about it too. Enuff to cause questions about my sexuality as well(they got answered, lol).

I don't often confess to really diggin those Sophie b hawkins tunes I have. I find my self whistling Katy Perry waaay to often. But fuck it...I like it. It not stuff I look forward to playing at a dominos table tho.

Mostly male bands. And my favorite male solo artists such and Prince and Rick James, I consider them "bands" also because they're just as hard as the bands.

My music collection used to consist of about 90% male singers or male-led bands... not by design or anything, that was just the way it seemed to work out. But since I actually noticed that, I've made a particular effort to check out more female acts, and I've found some absolute gems in the process.

I used to think that I didn't listen to women so much as I naturally found what men sung about to be more 'relatable', but as someone else said above, listening to female singers is like a look into the female psyche of sorts. You just need to know who to look for in the more male-dominated genres, really...

Excellent topic for a thread! nod

hmmm

I'm going to have to sort thru my music and see whether or not I gravitate to a particular gender or not.

Off-hand I'd say that I'm probably evenly-split as far as that goes...but my "preference" varies depending on my mood.

I have a VERY STRONG preference for female musicians/ singers

Females have more interesting voices to me, and tend to be more expressive and emotive in songs than men are shrug

I agree with you...but men can bring a perspective women can....and they Rick like monkeys business.

But yeah, women seem to have more interesting voices, I think its actually their social allowance for flamboyant vocal acrobats.
