One of my favorite productions from that dynamic duo, Jam & Lewis! Classic groove. So MPLS!

Hmm....I think I could agree with this. It certainly is their nastiest (pun intended).

I remember the first time I heard this was in Boston on W.I.L.D. and I was driving a truck at that time. I had 2 pull over and wait for the D.J. to announce who the singer was. I absolutely LOVED the groove! Ends up, he (the D.J.) didn't know how 2 pronounce her name, so he said, "Chur Relley." LOL! I also remember waiting for the 12" to come out and when it did, it was instrumental on both sides. It was a CBS mess up or sumpthin'. Finally waited 4 the album and have adored her ever since! I wonder if she'll ever get back with Flyte Tyme and do another album? She's like 53 now, so maybe the industry isn't being too kind, but c'mon...three albums in a row went GOLD, for God's sake! That should tell 'em sumpthin'! Love me some Cheryl Week Norton! Ma GIRL!!! Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

I saw an old clip online of Robert Palmer perfoming this song on Johnny Carson's show. That live performance sounded closer to Cherelle's original version, and nothing like his famous studio version on the Riptide album.
Edited to add clip [Edited 4/23/12 17:17pm] ~Using the Fat Albert emoticon 'cause no one else is... ~

Edited to add clip [Edited 4/23/12 17:17pm] It didnt take long for Palmer to pop up in this thread....smh His version is great, but I think the OP made this thread to give HER some shine for a change.....

Not sure why you're shaking your head because I posted a Robert Palmer clip. I just posted it to make the point that when he covered the song live, he tried to make it sound like Cherelle's. Not trying to slight Cherelle in any way. Love her version the best. ~Using the Fat Albert emoticon 'cause no one else is... ~

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

That was cool. I don't think I've ever heard a version of this song that I didn't like. How rare is it that a song could still stand on its own regardless of its rendition?

I don't think I'd say it's their BEST production, but it's easily Top 10, if not Top 5. Those brothers have too many jams. |

They have a lot of grooves to consider but yes I agree!

Jam & Lewis did it for Mariah on the Glitter album. It's really good. It sounds almost exactly like Cherelle's orignial.
Does anyone know if Mariah just used the original tracks or did J&L re-play it for her? They sound so close! (I never did an A/B test though)

Exact same instrumental. Mariah's version is shorter, so they made some edits to the sections, but it's not replayed.
