I was rolling my eyes until the last part of the clip when she said something fascinating. After complaining about the downgrading of musical standards caused by the over-emphasis on image, she conceded the possibility that she herself may be a symptom of the problem. I respect her for that.

There are numerous "artists" who prosper while producing soulless music who never have an iota of shame about it. She on the other hand is saying her respect for the music is such that she would retire if she thought she was part of that.

The bad news for her is that - and I hate to say this as she's such a nice person - she is indeed a symptom of the problem. As a young white ingenue with a black-sounding voice she was given opportunities many far more talented black women would be denied. I do think she has the potential to be great as there is real talent (and integrity) there, but she is a looong way from fulfilling that potential.

Oh lawd , that nonsense again rolleyes

There's plenty ugly black female singers that made it big

I guarantee you the same girl in the same place and time with black skin would not have had so many smiling men opening so many useful doors for her. It's not Joss' fault, but it's the way the world is and I think Joss probably knows it.

Knows it or just realising it. She IS at best a novelty... by the way... who said you have to be Black to get all preachy?!

But fact and I don't wanna get bogged down in the Black/White thing anymore but fishslap and I'll use humble stats here... : There are likely 100 better Black singers (ugly or not) than Joss Stone, but 10 Joss Stones of the world will probably get more opportunity - simply because they could simply sound 'Black'...

FYI, this ain't anything new, but Joss Stone acting as some kinda conduit?!

stone fell for the hype and all of a sudden within a few years she starts acting all"black" and preaching about music?

its fucking embarrasing

its a little bit like when madonna started living in england and pretending she spoke in that cod UK accent

I know exactly what you mean, but it's inevitable.

She was pushed out there as a novelty act whether she knew it or not; the novelty being that she was a posh English kid imitating a 45 year old soul mama. Now she's trying to grow into an authentic, mature artist and it's an awkward fit at the moment.

She hasn't developed enough as a person (or as an artist) to fill that role yet so it feels inauthentic, but I give her credit for at least trying. Her heart is in the right place and there's no doubt she DOES respect the music. Also, underneath the flaws there is some genuine talent there.

Exactly, she can't help what she is, and that should not preclude her from liking whatever type of music she wants to like.

And she's not that bad. If it was Britney saying this stuff, I would be laughing right along with everyone else, but at least this girl can sing a little bit.

Children's books author, who wrote the "Famous five" books. Geez, I'm I that old knowing that?

And yeah, I like Joss Stone too. Saw her in concert two years ago and it was pretty good.

Exactly! and also how do we what is "genuine" ? when someone speaks, Joss has been talking like this since day one, lets not forget she was discovered by Betty Wright, a soul singer, she wasnt plucked up by a bunch a white dudes that cashed in on her, and also she isnt speaking this way because she doesnt sell? She barely sold before, she wasnt like selling alanis morrisette numbers then fell off, she barely had a gold album. Thing is that if she was an ugly woman no one would care and then all of a sudden we'd say she was "genuine" and thats the truth, double standard, because if she were a man, she could get away with all kinds of shit, i mean she could be Chris Borwn and beat down a woman and we'll make excuses for his actions and say "oh you gotta seperate the man from the beating" but she isnt "genuine" "his apologies are". And can we also not cherry pick the "arists" that can sound "black" as we say and are white, Daryl Hall or George Michael or Michael Mcdonald or any other man, but as soon as Joss Stone or an Adele jumps in shit goes haywire, and they say we are more open minded today?? really? we are more in our own boxes today than ever.

I agree with both y'all bout Joss. I've always thought the talent was there...but the right "fit" with production & material was lacking. Hope she finds her way eventually.

Funny, Lyecry mentioned Lisa Stansfield...I was spinning some of her back catalog last night & thought "THIS is what Joss Stone should be doin"

A little more "maturity" (yet keep the material original...go easy on the covers) in her sets & maybe a lil less in that voice & she could catch fire, IMO.

Now see, I feel quite the opposite. I think she's blessed with a top-notch material, but her singing leave alot to be desired.

Yeah..I feel you on that. Her voice isn't one of those clearly "shimmering" five octave instruments, for sure. I just think maybe it's part of the problem with the fit of the material. That huskier / soulful thang only complements certain stuff. She hasn't sung bad stuff..just the wrong stuff.

Her singing tracks (covers esp) that play as way "older" than her youth just strike a weird chord (no pun intended).

That's where I loved Stansfield's output (esp on 2001's "Face Up")..not tween market stuff, original songs, yet plenty of soul....and contemporary subject matter. Just kinda felt like what might fit Joss' image, age & voice better to me.

This was the first time I ever saw Joss and I was impressed. Her stage presence here is perfect; completely natural and free. It's also the only song of hers I ever liked (though I wouldn't have it on my ipod). Unfortunately I never saw her quite as good again which is why I say she's not fulfilling her potential.

The quality of this footage ain't great, but if ya can't see the talent on display here then you're clearly prejudiced.
