Brandy: "Lying About Marriage Was the Fall of My Career"

April 23, 2012

Link

As Ray J puts it, his sister Brandy was at one time, "America's sweetheart." The singer was just a teenager when she released her first album, Brandy, later starring as the girl-next-door on her own television sitcom, Moesha.

In a clip from VH1's upcoming Behind the Music special, Brandy says that in public, "It was all about setting this perfect image."

That perfect image was one that Brandy never felt she quite lived up to, a friend reveals in the Behind the Music sneak peek. Brandy's squeaky-clean persona was threatened when the 23-year-old revealed that she was pregnant.

Along with the announcement that Brandy was having her first baby, she also introduced fans to the child's father, Robert Smith, whom she identified as her husband. The relationship didn't work out however, and a year after Bran gave birth to her daughter, Sy'rai, she and Robert officially announced their separation.

What fans didn't know, and what Robert later revealed, was that he and Brandy had never been legally married. In her Behind the Music documentary, Brandy, admits, "The lie about being married was the fall of my career. Everything changed."

Brandy, who's been working on her upcoming album Two Eleven, also discusses the fatal car crash that brought her serious legal trouble in 2006.

Her Behind the Music episode airs Wednesday at 9 p.m. E.S.T.

I'd like to think that her limited vocals and inability to create music on her might have had something to do with that fall too.

I feel sorry for her baby's father. She likes to disrespect him, it seems to me. She once said in an interview that she never loved him and that even though he was crazy about her, she wasn't interested in him. I thought it was a hurtful thing to say.

Her own stupid fault. Who the hell still rushes into a marriage (or lies about being in one) because they had a child? Brandy and her people were so arrogant and naive about her obviously-phony image that they took it back to 1956 with that shit, and it wasn't even necessary. No one cares about your out-of-wedlock baby, Brandy. People DO care about being lied to.

Yeah, it's not as if anything she's done within the past 8 or so years would have succeded had she never had a messy personal life.

WTF?

How is her lie about being married the fall of her career?

Mind you, Kim Kardashian is famous for being fucked on camera by

Brandy's little brother - who gives a shit about her lying about her

faux marriage? Ours is a forgiving society. And I'm not buying that

Brandy's success was due to her squeaky clean image.

Remember, things were "clean" in the 90's which were still sorta finishing off in the early 00's lol

I think her people or her mother made her do it, wasn't she managed by her?

Solange did the same thing kind of when she got preggers. It was a rushed shotgun wedding that lasted 5 minutes and all because the Knowles family image had to be upheld. You should see her wedding pics-Tina and Matthew look real SEVERE.

Re Brandy, that man was not crazy about her. He said some horrible things about her and he is the one that revealed they weren't hitched.

spit I think she's wrong about that because this is the first I've heard of her being married. lol

I thought this was going to be breaking news that she'd been married for years and was lying about it. shrug

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Nothing really was to begin with, but you were more likely to find squeaky clean in the 90's compared to the 00's IMO

yep, if you make a good record, people will buy it.....who cares if you're married or not?

Britney had a clean image and went all down....but was still selling after that.

Brittanys music has never been all that great to me but the thing here is she has a dedicated fanbase that grew up with her similiar to Brandy.

Full Moon and Afrodisiac were praised by those in the industry too, but not reflected in the numbers. I don't believe it has to do with good music. Brandy was huge in the 90's from what I remember, but Britney was talked about way more and marketed to little white girls, which led to bigger numbers though her voice is weak and her dancing is stale. Her pretty looks and strong songwriting team is what got her through.

I don't think so Brandy. I think it was the arrival of Alicia Keys the year before, the success of Ashanti during Full Moon's chart-run, and the explosion of you know who in 2003. You kinda got lost in the shuffle. Not only you...Monica, Mya...a whole bunch of yal. Nobody cared about you being married or not. Shit the car crash barely got any media play.

It wasn't blown up like that. It was on black blogs and maybe made one cycle of coverage. It wasn't repeated over and over.

Britney cutting her hair was all over the media.

The real downfall was when Rodney "Darkchild" Jenkins (Brandy's producer/beatmaker AND Robert Smith's cousin) didn't want to have anything to do with Brandy professionally OR personally because of Brandy hook-up with Robert in the first place.
