What she said was beautiful! I buy and listen to older music because it is so much better (in general). They just seem to care more about quality. Joss is saying that she respects that sentiment and wants to emulate it.

I have her first 3 records. She was discovered by Betty Wright. Lattimore (Let's Straighten It Out), Little Beaver, and other veteran soul musicians played on her first 2 albums. She was around 16 on her debut.

People always say that when they flop though. It's just about the music. Joss please. If you had the chance to sell like Adele you'd take it.

I have that "The Soul Sessions" EP or whatever it's called.

I used to love "Fell in Love with a Boy"...until I heard Nikka Costa.

Then all I could think was how much better she'd sound singing it. lol

Her vocals always seemed so forced to me. No natural flow. Lisa Stansfield now THAT'S blue eyed soul that flows naturally.

I was rolling my eyes until the last part of the clip when she said something fascinating. After complaining about the downgrading of musical standards caused by the over-emphasis on image, she conceded the possibility that she herself may be a symptom of the problem. I respect her for that.

There are numerous "artists" who prosper while producing soulless music who never have an iota of shame about it. She on the other hand is saying her respect for the music is such that she would retire if she thought she was part of that.

The bad news for her is that - and I hate to say this as she's such a nice person - she is indeed a symptom of the problem. As a young white ingenue with a black-sounding voice she was given opportunities many far more talented black women would be denied. I do think she has the potential to be great as there is real talent (and integrity) there, but she is a looong way from fulfilling that potential.

After hearing this track from Jeff Beck's EMOTION & COMMOTION release, it occurred to me that she should probably change genres.

...There's No Other Me

For my money, she comes off much better as a Rock vocalist.

Full of shit? Man, she was right on!

"Music back then was good because it had to be." Hell yeah! There were no videos, no auto-tuners, etc. There was just radio, your live act, and maybe a lip-synch on "American Bandstand", "Soul Train" or "Don Kirschner's Rock Concert".

I don't agree with everything she does, but she is right freaking on in that clip.

Okay, but how cynical are we now that we cannot take anyone for their word, and if they say the right thing it's somehow worse than believably saying the wrong thing?

I don't think she's that great, but I do believe she tries to be great in her own way and I do believe what she says.

shes a middle class white girl from the home counties whom was nabbed by a few producers love being one to try and get some of that crossover cash

stone fell for the hype and all of a sudden within a few years she starts acting all"black" and preaching about music?

its fucking embarrasing

its a little bit like when madonna started living in england and pretending she spoke in that cod UK accent

I know exactly what you mean, but it's inevitable.

She was pushed out there as a novelty act whether she knew it or not; the novelty being that she was a posh English kid imitating a 45 year old soul mama. Now she's trying to grow into an authentic, mature artist and it's an awkward fit at the moment.

She hasn't developed enough as a person (or as an artist) to fill that role yet so it feels inauthentic, but I give her credit for at least trying. Her heart is in the right place and there's no doubt she DOES respect the music. Also, underneath the flaws there is some genuine talent there.
