U sound like me. When Rhino reissued his albums in the 90s, I rushed out to get them after hearing all of these people say how he influenced thier music. I started listening and loved his voice, but didn't really get the music. Like you, I tend to prefer his duets with Roberta over his solo work.

His "music" is some what limited compared 2 Marvin, but his vocals are ridiculas.

I can agree to that, too. nod

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I only know Donny from This Christmas lol So I'll go with Marvin. Got To Give It Up is one of the best songs recorded in the history of popular music imo.

Marvin hands down. I like Donny, don't get me wrong, but I have to be in a certain mood to listen to his music. As for Marvin on the other hand, he has songs that fit every one of my moods.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Marvin all the way. I do like Donny, but Marvin has a pure, beautiful voice. His lyrics and arrangements are amazing.

I think his musical arrangements and conductions are even more "ridiculous" (meaning great).

....

I refuse to choose between the two-- I love both, and I think the world is diminished in not having either of them around anymore....

The best work of both can make me stop breathing sometimes, lol

Although Donny's catalog is more uneven, I will say that IMO Donny's Extensions of a Man is one of the Greatest albums!!

Donny's opening composition and segue is sweeping and magnificent.....

Donny Hathaway - "I Love the Lord He Heard My Cry/Someday We'll All Be Free"

I forgot about Extension of a Man. doh! Correction: Donny had two great albums (Everything is Everything and Extension of a Man). nod The Donny Hathaway one is good for his interpretations of other tracks (I still prefer his versions of "A Song for You" and "Giving Up") but I preferred the albums with the original material.

biggrin Yeah, I agree --I think those are his best....

I also love the scope of Extension Of a Man....in addition to the opening suite, he'll do a song like Magdalena.....

and then turn around and throw this instrumental like Valdez in The Country on ya

then, finish you off with this Leon Ware ballad.....

The man was gifted. He did one thing Marvin and Stevie never did: conduct his own orchestra.

Donny Hathaway Live is necessary.

Also, Donny Hathaway performing "The "Ghetto" on "Soul", an old tv show is awesome
