Straight up Rnb. My cousin Reena said all the black stations played it and every black girl was in love with GM.

My cousin also said that when it "Careless Whisper" came out, you couldn't FIND a black station that wouldn't play that song. Wasn't Wham on some Motown special back in the day?

Culture Club got a lot of R&B airplay too.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Yes it was. I think it was a top 10 R&B hit in Billboard. But it sounded similar to Christmas Rappin by Kurtis Blow. I've never heard Rock The Casbah or Kajagoogoo though. The local R&B station would play the instrumental of Talking In Your Sleep by The Romantics though. Video Soul on BET played David Lee Roth & Air Supply videos, but I didn't hear them on the R&B station.

Wham! still kind of have a cheese factor by some people to them. But i know that a lot of black stations play Careless Whisper & I'm Your Man. To me there a straight up R&B/Pop band. But get looked down upon a lot cause of Wake Me Up & Bad Boys... not to mention the cheesy videos lol But hey it was the 80's....

nod Duran Duran,The Human League and Madonna also got alot of airplay on R&B stations. There was alot of crossover going on in the 80s! Our local R&B station even played Huey Lewis and The News' "I Want A New Drug".

Radio stations wanted a diverse audience. For them to add in the dance music at the time made the format more appealing. Now a days, they refer to it as a Rhythmic CHR format (kinda like The Heat on SiriusXM), but it's all the same.

If you notice on the 80s episodes of Soul Train, they did the same thing to go after Bandstand and MTV. They played pop videos and a few pop tunes for the dancers to dance to.

Loooooooooove this song!!! I was listening to it the other night! One of the best pop/r&b classics ever!

I love Wham's other songs too, since I was a baby. And that's cool Culture Club was on r&b radio, I'm guessing Time (Clock of the Heart)? That's totally r&b, love that song!

I wouldn't say that. Especially considering Robin Thicke and Daryl Hall (in his hey-day) are excellent singers also.

No comment on Alan Thicke's son ( lol ) but Daryl Hall is definitely a soul brother... so is Todd Rundgren.

^ I like Robin Thicke. He has style and charisma moreso than a great singing voice. Magic Touch and Angel are the shit, no denying it.

Anyway, this is one of the great WHAM songs and definitely has that fine mix of pop and R&B. George's vocals are awesome toward the end.

But let's be real. There was never any WHAM it was ALL GEORGE! That other dude was freeloading like a muthafucca.

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer. rose
