My cousin also said Culture Club got play on Rnb stations, as did ABC, Spandau Ballet, Kajagoogoo and Rock the Casbah, hell, she said rnb stations even rocked Another One Bites the Dust

It was the bass line in Another One bites the Dust that got the song airplay on RB stations.

The ones that got me was Do You Thnk I'm Sexy -- Rod Stewart and Thomas Dolby Blinded Me with Science.

But I will say, I heard some TIGHT remixes with Thomas Dolby and mixes with that song and Cosmic Cars.

This was the height of Pop locking... and BFORE anyone heard of the "moonwalk"

I wouldn't say that. Especially considering Robin Thicke and Daryl Hall (in his hey-day) are excellent singers also.

No comment on Alan Thicke's son ( lol ) but Daryl Hall is definitely a soul brother... so is Todd Rundgren.

You know how I feel about Robin... no comment indeed. lol

Thicke has his moments; I won't hate on him.

Hall goes way back, though. THE Philly R&B station would always promote Hall & Oates as family. They went to the city university and Hall sung harmonies with the Delfonics and the like, did session work with Gamble and Huff so yeah... he's all soul. And he vouches for Rundgren as being a kindred spirit. I mean he did do 'Hello, It's me', but other than that I don't know his catalogue that well.

He was straight pop until around A Wizard, A True Star, go listen to these tracks:

Sometimes I Don't Know What to Feel

Soul Medley: I'm So Proud/Ooh Baby Baby/Cool Jerk

Born to Synthesize

Fair Warning

The Verb "To Love"

Love is the Answer (with Utopia)

Compassion

Lost Horizon

----

In terms of vocal range and even musical style, that's the R&B cuts Todd did... just off the top of my dome... nod

GOT NO BETTER THAN THIS SONG BACK IN THE DAY. GEORGE MICHAEL WAS THAT DUDE!

You gotta be living some alternate reality NOT to give George his props, for vocals alone. Plus for a while, dude could write a banging pop/dance jam in his sleep, lol. If he hadn't been accused of Elvis-ing and gotten all sensitive about it, he would have been strong well into the '90s.

re Hall and Oates, my family grew up an hour and some change from philly, so those were our radio stations. My cousin Reena said the rnb stations played them to death-"No Can Do", "Your Imagination", "Maneater" "One on One", they were considered black, period.

hammer I like Robin! Does he write his own songs? I thought I heard he does. Because I'm really like love after war and pretty little heart.

Yeah Robin writes and produces most of his own stuff. (Mostly, I think he sometimes includes other writers and producers on his stuff)

But nothing he does compares to the subject of this thread. lol

Belated thanks for the recommended tracks, man!

I caught the Live From Darryl's House with Rundgren, btw, and Hall again spoke of him as coming from the same place musically. As I check him out, Rundgren just seems more experimental... interesting dude.

Always loved this one. It's probably just ahead of "Freedom" as the best Wham! track in my book.

This is my favorite Wham song.....and GM is FFFFFINE!!!!!

Yes they played Wham and the whole Euro invasion on R&B stations very heavy here in NY/NJ. Madonna, Eurythmics, Tears for Fears, The Police, Culture Club, and yes Kajagoogoo's Too Shy Whhhaat!? Oh and The Clash Magnificant Dance got much love.

I also sing this song as if I was the man himself, and can't carry a tune, but I don't give a damn. Father Figure and Freedom are fantastic as well. These songs will never be touched.

Oooh, I LOVED this song back in the day!!!

I also loved Prince (or course!) and would listen to "Purple Rain" with my neighbor, Rebecca.

One day Rebecca announced that I could 'have' Prince because she was "devoted to" George Michael. Poor Rebecca. Sadly, George wasn't the last gay man she was in love with.
