Madonna Producer: “She Has Succeeded Where Michael Jackson Failed”

Madonna Producer: She Has Succeeded Where Michael Jackson Failed

It seems Madonna‘s taste for controversy has rubbed off on those around her; namely producer Martin Sloveig.

For, the ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ crafter made quite the gaffe when talking up the 53 year old in a recent interview.

Peep his words after the jump…

Speaking to French radio station Europe1 this week, Sloveig had the following to say when quizzed on Madonna’s legacy:

She has left her landmark in music and fashion in every era. In the 80s, in the 90s.And she has succeeded – what I think Michael Jackson has failed to do – to still be relevant in the 2000s working with Mirwais and Stuart Price. I’m more a fan of those albums than the ones she released when she started. And THAT is impressive to me.”

And that’s not all. When inevitably questioned about the singer’s “beef” with Lady GaGa, the hitmaker added:

“No (GaGa did not take her crown). I think she’s a disciple. There’s a master and a disciple. It’s very simple. We all have a role model, don’t we?”

———————————-

Clearly, those Live Nation cheques have Sloveig feeling all sorts of dizzy, because he’s spouting hot doo doo on a platter. Especially when it comes to MJ.

For, in his brief 50 years, Michael achieved a level of legend (and had a cultural impact) which will almost certainly never be seen again. Ever.

Though MJ and Madonna are routinely hailed as the King and Queen of Pop, it’s worth noting that Michael achieved such status without flashing his privates, leeching on younger stars, or courting controversy. And while troubles may have consumed the final years of his career, he boasts a catalogue of hits which aren’t confined to the era they were created. They remain relevant till this very day. Can the same be said for the material which has mobilised Madonna’s longevity (particularly her latter efforts)?

And that’s not to take away from ‘M’, as her run (how ever cunning) has been wholly impressive. However, Sloveig highlights what not to do when working with an artist of Maggie’s caliber: become blinded. It’ll only lead to soundbites such as those above, which make him sound wacker than the material he’s been cooking up with Madge as of late.

I honestly see where is coming from but I dont agree. Why comare her to someone who released little to nothing in the '00s. MJ released an album at he beginning of the decade and announced a tour at the end. If anything compare her to someone like Prince or Janet who constantly put out product in the '00s. Im also sure that there are other ways he can big up Madonna without putting MJ down.

yep, although he only released one cd after History, it's pretty hard to stay relevant if you don't release music.

No, he isn't! Like purple05 said, he should try to compare her to someone like Prince or Janet, who released albums and toured in the '00s and tried to stay relevant. Michael was raising his kids in the '00s and dealing with the fallout from being wrongly accused again and fighting for his life. It's comparing apples and oranges.

What makes somebody relevant? Michael's "Invincible" sold over 10 million, and had a top ten hit. "This Is It" was sold out.. 50 shows. His music was still everywhere on the radio. He was constantly in the news (maybe not always for the music). confuse Plus, Madonna never had "allegations" or lenghty trials to throw her career off track.

My prediction? This gets locked and redirected to MJ sticky.

He doesn't say MJ was bad. He just says Madonna has adapted well to the times. Her sound varies from the 80s to the 90s to the 00s whereas once MJ found his sound he never left it.

I don't think that's dissing MJ at all. Most artists stay true to their style shrug

She hasn't been relevant for over a decade. Concert sales and record sales dont mean an artist is relevant. I know that sounds ass backwards but its hard to explain.

The Stones and U2 always have the highest grossing cocnerts just like she does..but they are not relevant.

What trend has Madonna ever set? I mean really. Back in the salad days, you would hear a song, and before you heard a voice, you knew it was a MJ song. And that goes triple fold for Prince. You hear it, it may be unlike anything you have heard before, but it was recognizable and distinctive. Madonna just aped other things that were on the radio at the time. Not saying it is a bad thing, it certainly worked to her favor.

This thread is alot less ugly than I thought it'd be, either way Patrick has a point when he says MJ didn't even really try to stay relevent.

People get so hung up on charts and who is so called relevant. How about Michael could sing while Madonna STILL can't? Chart that. What is her talent again?

Continue to drone on and on about hits and numbers regarding people with little to no talent. blahblah

I kind of agree with this. Although Invincible outsold Madonna's albums in the 00's with very little promotion, he had too much to deal with to compare the two. I agree with the writer that her albums of the past decade were up there with her first few. I could enjoy AL and Confessions start to finish and couldn't do that since Like A Virgin though I have all her albums. I can sometimes do it with Hard Candy as well and she did sell out many tours so she was relevant. Though I enjoyed her, I was often so sad MJ was not active and being around like she was, cause I love him even more and it's clear she loves him and is inspired by him too and you can hear it in her music at times indirectly.

Martin needs to shut up.
Who cares about being influencial in fashion?

Her stylists did that.

Her music has been mediocre throughout her whole carreer with very few exceptions.

Whereas Michael didn't have to try to stay relevant.
He has a true legendary status.
Musically they dont even belong in the same league.

To compare the work of Michael and Madonna in 00's - almost as absurd as to compare their work in the '70s. Hell, even in the 60s, Michael was more productive than in the 00's. lol
Madge has released four albums in the 00's, three of which are decent (although the last great album she released in 1998, IMHO), has released several videos, has conducted several tours .... and what did Michael?? One crappy album? It is incomparable. But Michael has worked very hard in the 70s, it could exonerate him.
Do not misunderstand, I like Michael a lot more and I think he is greater artist in general, but in the 00's he has done absolutely nothing worthy, except for one great song - Whatever Happens

OK people can we really just be civil about this.

Both are talented.

And in essence Martin is correct, but only bc MJ kept under the radar this decade.

Comparisons get us no where, and getting worked up about it is a waste of energy.

He could only make shitty music and didn't want to release it?

I think he was busy with other stuff, that's why he didn't do it.

And saying Madonna released shitty music is just not the case, you may not like it but it wasn't shit.

Ehmmm, no.

You probably think I'm a blind MJ fan.
I'm not.

I just don't think Martin is right.
Madonna's music/fashion/shockvalue etc combined can not touch MJ's musical legacy. He's far too big and influencial in every way for Martin to say that MJ failed at being relevant. He doesnt have to be relevant, he is Michael Jackson!

Sorry to say but if we want to compare Madonna to someone... Let's start with Rihanna/Britney Spears/Nicki Minaj etc etc and every other popstar that is willing to follow ANY trend and fashion to stay relevant.

But it's all good. We are all tlking about this and that's just what Martin Solveig wants.
