Aretha Franklin’s Statement Regarding Irresponsible and Inaccurate Reporting

Extra TV, the New York Post and Newsday (New York) should stop the BS. Cissy Houston and I have been longtime friends for almost 50 years. I have four invitations and parking passes that were sent to me for the funeral. Extra TV, the New York Post and Newsday (New York) are more interested in sensationalism and negative speculations than the truth. People are getting their information from the wrong source. The intelligent and the thoughtful thing to do would be to respect and have some sensitivity to the moment. If you don’t know how, at least try. Cissy does not need ridiculous speculation and neither do I—particularly at this time. Also, with respect to the Today Show, my entire statement was pretaped. However, the Today Show did not air the part of my statement, which said, “This is no reflection on Cissy or Nippy’s upbringing.” Knowing Cissy as well as I do, I know Whitney left home right and properly. I was generalizing and it was a well intended statement for any young adult coming into the music industry. I was not speaking of anyone specifically.

I understand her not wanting to cancel again.. this was a make up show from last year when she cancelled when she got sick.. a older co worker of mine have been waiting on this show for months.. but i wished she had attented the funeral, But Dionne said it best when she said "she's not here but she's here"

She still could have rescedule it was obviously for a legit reason... Im sure her fans would understand that...

A show is really no excuse whether resceduled or not..

It wouldn't have hurt her to reschedule. I just don't buy the excuse of spasms especially in the timeline.

No one is giving hell to her co-stars in WAITING TO EXHALE, the living members of TLC, Babyface, Denzel Washington, Dolly Parton, George Michael, David Foster, all of whom did not attend.

As far as I am concerned, sh*t happens and Aretha despite all of her divaisms is still a human and prone to Murphy's Law.

None of us know her private communciations with Emily "Cissy" Drinkard Houston, and after all funerals are for the living, because what was in the casket was dead and just a body cavity.

EXACTLY plus all these people that DONT live in teh NYC/NJ area, dont realize the traffic coming and going into the city is CRAZY especially on the weekends, there are no backroads to get into NJ/NYC. AT THE POINT OF DAY THE FUNERAL WAS AND FOR HER TO GET BACK SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN TRAFFIC.

I agree with that as well but I would think since Aretha has claimed to have been really close to Whitney and her family she would go and support the family. A concert is not something that could have not been rescheduled. I know Aretha is human but she cant honestly keep insisting that she was so close with the family and insisted she couldnt go to a funeral because of a show...which is a lame excuse people reschedule all the time... Janet was on a plane to go starting shooting her a movie and asked her pilot to re route when she got the news about Michael...

If she wanted to really be there... she would have... period.

this is where everyone want to play armchair quarterback. THE DATES Aretha where playing where already makeup dates from 2011. and since you dont live here in NYC/NJ you dont know how crazy the traffic is on the weekends. so save your comments for another day.

I look at it like this: Aretha was going to go, she was still attending as far as Whitney's family was concerned, especially after Dionne said her name as if she was there (and she wasn't). It was like she just didn't show up. At least tell them you're not going because of pains in your leg. Makes no sense to think you couldn't have someone alarm the family that you wasn't coming instead of having the family wonder where you are. She didn't pull that route with Luther and she was in advanced age then too. Can't say she handled it correctly. Still a hot ass mess anyway.

Who the hell are you to tell me to save my damn comments? Who exactly are you talking to? I will comment and say whatever I want ... thankyou

I love Aretha and all those things are taken in consideration but that mightier than thou statement above does not help with taking all those things into consideration.

I think it's more than just the fans would have understood. There's other monies involved with cancelling and rescheduling a show.. And from experience i know that not attending someones funeral does not mean that person doesn't care..

Obviously Aretha did care. She was a family friend for years and despite their differences (I did hint they had had beef in the past) she and Cissy were still considered close. It's just that Aretha's matter of how things broke down could've been handled better than they were so she's not exempt to criticism. She was invited and she said she was gonna be there, then the last minute she canceled due to "spasms". It wasn't really that she couldn't take funerals but it doesn't seem like she called Cissy and 'em and tell them right away so that's why Dionne had the confused look. Again, it would've been understood if she simply CALLED.

Angela Bassett and her husband Courtney Vance tributed Whitney on their facebook pages. Angela BAssett was at Whitney's going home service. I've seen pictures of her at the service. Aretha was a long time family friend and a huge influence to /whitney so much that she called her Aunt Ree. Those other people you mentioned did not have that time of connection to whitney so don't even know why you mentioned them.

Aretha is a hot azz mess and that is why she got a whipping on twitter and people find her excuse disingenuos.

I would be in pain to send someone that means alot ot me and support a dear friend for a few hours, heck she could have gotten some muscle pain releivers. Done with her. Over it.

Timmy I think Dionne was just reading from the Obituary. I mean i knew she wasnt there cause they were saying it all morning that Aretha Franklin was not going to attend of said ailment and someone there knew Aretha wasn't there because it took her about 3 sec to correct herself..

Even then, why announce her as she's here? Maybe she was following order but it just seems suspicious to me. I mean I'm glad Dionne did say what she said but it still wasn't handled right on Aretha's behalf. She knows how the media is and even with this statement she didn't exactly clear her name...

I would take that into consideration if she didn't go ahead and perform several concerts before, the day of and after whitney's home going.

Like I said, I'm over her, done. She showed me who she was before don't know why I expected any different I just feel for momma Cissy and Krissi and Dionne. I feel they were the ones who truly, truly unconditionally loved her.

Aretha has been in the industry long enough to smell shit miles away. She didn't go for a reason and I doubt it had anything to do with her feeling for Whitney.

Then she disinvited herself then if she knew what was up. Hell Diana Ross did it with Michael... so no one assumed Diana did him dirty except Michael fans that were picking on her for no reason. Why Aretha's different is because she had confirmed she was going. It still seems to me that she didn't tell Whitney's family that's all. Sure the media wasn't probably fair to her either but Aretha wasn't totally honest either.
