Worst Greatest Hits collection ever?

Now I have Madonna's was the best, have you ever bought a Greatest Hits collection that turned out to be anything but. What is the worst one you have ever bought (Meaning like the group had 2 or 3 )hits and the rest is all filler, bsides and bad cover versions or live versions recorded years after the original so they sound all croaky.

My nomination is Ottawan's Greatest Hits

They were a farily forgettable Martiniquan (!) disco group who had big hits with D.I.S.C.O. and Hands Up both were quite enjoyable, but the rest is unlistenable tosh and sounds ultracheap like bad Eurodisco. Surprisingly the 16 songs include DISCO in French which sounds like DISCO in English except its in French (Hardly novel as I suspect that Ottawan being from Martinique speak French as their first language). We also get nuggets like Shubidube Love, Crazy Music, Hello Rio and the aptly named "Get me some help". And then teh cod French/English titles Comme Aux USA, Doudou La Rumba and the Shalala song.

Surprisingly they are huge in Russia still. Anyone else heard this aural travesty or something else.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

SoulAlive

here's one that I'm not too impressed with...

Got to Be Real: Best of

It includes the single edit of "Got To Be Real"......it doesn't contain the hits "In The Night","Instant Love" or "New Dress"....and worst of all,it contains the single edit of "Encore" instead of the kickass 12" version! This CD is mostly filled with mediocre album tracks. They should have put ME in charge of compiling this thing, lol.

One of Natalie Cole's few greatest hits albums that covers her 80's period. Don't know the name or the cover, because I got rid of it immediately for not containing the single mix of Pink Cadillac.

How about discs like this one that deletes one of the artist's most well-known hit?? I mean, how you gonna do a "Best Of" CD on Champagne and leave off "Try Again"??? lol lol lol

Yes, and no

It is a real album, but it's not really a Greatest Hits. It's an attempt to cash in on some Beatles fame from tragically fired drummer Pete Best (circled).

All of those "playlist" and other such series compilations are terrible. They just pick ten seemingly random songs, and usually only one or two are actual hits. You see them at places like Walmart often for $5.

There's tons of bad Elvis comps, too.

Elvis Presley - Super Hits, for example:

  1. No More
  2. Little Sister
  3. Doncha Think It's About Time
  4. Don't Be Cruel
  5. I Gotta Know
  6. It's Now Or Never
  7. Never Ending
  8. Rags To Riches
  9. We Can Make The Morning
  10. Until It's Time For You To Go

I own many Elvis CDs/Records, and the bolded 3 are the only songs I know.. and I only like one of them.

Check out any of the "Super Hits" or "Playlist" series, if you want a terrible greatest hits.

playlist and super hits arent really Greatest Hits per say, generally made for truck stop, drug stores and off the beaten path stores. just a quick mix of songs.

I agree, but they pretend to be greatest hits, with titles like "Playlist: The Very Best Of..." and "Super Hits".. I can imagine anyone dumb enough to purchase those being quite disappointed.

I agree, alot of those collections are clearly "semi official" collections, usually some budget label that has bought the rights to songs from more Marginal artists like the ones we have posted. Itseasy to place a huge hit or two on a set, leave off another major the artist had and place on a whole lot of mediocre to unlistenable filler. Champaign, Stacey Q and Leaf being great examples.

The Beatles ones are the other type of Greatest hits scams, most of the titles would be from the time before their big deal and therefore poor quality recordings and amateurish compared to their later material. This is common for enduring groups and artists. Jime Hendrix for example, there have been dozens of so called Greatest Hits collections that cover his timi with a minor R and B singer called Lonnie Youngblood in 1963. Often the recordings are listed as Hendrix compositions from 1965 or 1966, when in fact he only played rhythm guitar on a few of the songs. Most have about 20 songs on them, some have Hendrix guitar playing, and one extreme case, some one had dubbed on some wah wah guitar playing on to them. They are issued regularly. If you are ever confused, some common song titles are "Walking with Bessie Mae", "Soul food thats what I like" and anything about a girl with Mae in her name. Even the Hendrix songs are hard to distinguish, he's not the author, he merely plays a guitar and theres no tricks, just basic rhythm guiatr backing, he was a hired man and had to follow rules I guess.

Another common one are David Bowie collections that consist of tracks off his 1967 The Laughing Gnome (Also known as David Bowie) album and a track called "Over the Top we go" by a gay group called Oscar in which he did some guiatr, but it ain't him. This album is an amusing novelty but more than once its cloying.

And then of course we have Minneapolis genius, another before they were famous cash in. Its been released at least 3 times.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

weren't these collections something like $7?

I'd say it's pretty good tracklist for a budget release.

I agree. There are actually some great compilations in the 20th Century Millennium series. The Jackson 5 compilation shown above is just a piss poor representation of the group, but hey, what do you expect?

Agreed. And what's Vol. 2 gonna consist of? All her greatest JAZZ hits? PLEASSSSSSE. She dumped her entire R&B core audience and's been gargling with White-Out for the past 25 years. WTF?!
