I've been trying to find the actual source. I know I read it somewhere. I think Natalie mentioned it around the time she was so high that there was a fire in her hotel and she didn't even get up... I swear I ain't making this up.
I believe you friend
I think it was mention in her book
I think I loan my copy out to someone
So I can't prove it

Yeah... apparently I can't find it on Google either. I swore someone posted some excerpts from Natalie's book on some website that pretty much said that she and Chaka were prostitutes for a moment. Google has been making it hard for me to search for sites that posted this. I think it was posted on Myra Panache's site but I can't find it anywhere yet. |

Clive signed her, made her image, and picked songs for her to sing. So he does have something to do with it. Cissy didn't do that, she was mostly a session singer, so doesn't have that much pull. Talent in itself doesn't make anyone popular. Clive signed Milli Vanilli, and they didn't sing at all on their record, but he made them popular.
[Edited 2/13/12 11:54am]
That's right. That's what Clive did, and that's it (albeit very significant). He did not discover her. That would mean her voice was not known to anyone before he heard it, and that's not the case.
I was responding to the comment about "success", not "discovering". Clive was responsible for her success. Cissy didn't push her daughter into a singing career, like the Osmond & Jackson families.
Yes, I agree that. This is what Whitney said herself. Her parents were not big on her SERIOUSLY being in the business. If thats what they wanted it would've happened, they knew many legendary people! Clive did help her by selling her to the masses, like he's done others, he's really great at it. But he didn't give her the gift....it was already there and they didn't need him.
**I've heard really off things about him and never really wanted to believe it. But now, his character is in serious question. [Edited 2/16/12 15:24pm] |

Whitney had constantly told the story of her wanting to be a singer and Cissy was warning her about what she was getting herself into but Whitney seemed driven and determined to do what her mother and cousin Dionne and godmother Aretha had done before her. |

You know what, THAT DID IT for me! Alot of the other stuff happened before my time and/or is hush-hush! But this Grammy party **** was just IT, no one can deny what happened! I know if things are planned or happened so close to tragedy its hard to stop. However,if he couldn't stop, at least thank everyone for coming have dinner and than send their asses home! To go on with a full party/celebration was a hot mess. [Edited 2/16/12 15:32pm] |

Or at least delayed it for a few hours while the police and 'em were up there wondering how to get the body out of there while a fucking party was going on. That was just stupid in my honest opinion. |

Than IF you are so struck by grief, do you need to read from a sheet of paper?! Wouldn't your words just come from the heart/head! Even if I were an artist I wouldn't have been there so for him to be is ODD! The Grammys is a different story but a grammy party....please! Who needed it?! [Edited 2/16/12 15:35pm]

Wow,IDK about the full relationship,we all have our views...but they had something! Either way Clive's been around this person since the 1980s! Not to mention all the money & attention she got for you and your label! Even if you don't love her, where's the respect?! |

Yeah Clive even pushed her to tour for her last album despite the fact Whitney knew she wasn't ready because her voice was shot... |

Yes! I have to say when you are young you don't fully know, you wanna see the good in people. Also we never seen anything like Whitney(or MJ)...they were like mega! So sure she was warned but no one can imagine what it had been like for them. I would never wish to be THAT famous. My heart does hurt for her mother, she tried! [Edited 2/16/12 16:45pm] |

It still doesn't make sense 2 me. Why would they turn her over 2 Clive?
Because of his heavyweight status in the recording industry. That dude's been an industry kingpin heading labels and signing artists going back to Janis Joplin in the 60's. He's also been the executive muscle behind the labels that introduced the world to Santana, Kenny Loggins, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, and Earth Wind & Fire and lord knows how many others. He was the dude with the music industry Midas touch. |

Houston had previously been offered several recording agencies (Michael Zager in 1980, and Elektra Records in 1981). In 1983, Gerry Griffith, an A&R representative from Arista Records saw her performing with her mother in a New York City nightclub and was impressed. He convinced Arista's head Clive Davis to make time to see Houston perform. Davis too was impressed and offered a worldwide recording contract which Houston signed. Later that year, she made her national televised debut alongside Davis on The Merv Griffin Show.[21]
I'm not sure if this is all true, but this is the story I've always read and heard.
I've thought about this a lot the last few days and reflect back on things in my life. When I was trying to be a pro fighter, I couldn't do it without some asshole wanting to "discover" and take credit for me. I don't think it's any different in music. The problem is those assholes want total control of you and if you give an inch, they keep taking and taking until they run your life. I don't know shit about Clive, just the type of men who usually do what he does. you know the svengali trip. They never want people to grow up and that is stifling whether you are Whitney or Michael or Elvis. To this day there are and will continue to be legions of people who believe that other people are responsible for these peoples success. |

i remember when mj died, a man filed a creditor's claim on his estate claiming that he was owed money b/c of some contract joe signed when mj was a little boy. it was thrown out b/c it came too late, but it made me wonder if this man had been being collecting on mj all of his life.
i know there are people who appreciate frank dileo, but he's always struck me as the 'col. parker'-type who wanted to take all the credit for mj's solo success. quite honestly, *i* could have managed mj in the wake of thriller; it's not like frank had the task of establishing him from the ground up. he walked into a very good situation and only had to pick and choose from all the offers that mj was undoubtedly getting. plus, unlike dileo, i never saw madonna's managers out promoting themselves in commercials. they stayed behind the scenes. but to have frank tell it, mj was 'ungrateful'. Whitney Houston's former A&R Gerry Griffith (Arista Records) recently spoke to VIBE.com at VLN headquarters. In this segment, he recalls meeting the late singer and almost missing out on signing the talent. Griffith remembers passing up on her the first time and regretting it forever.
