Whether they admit it, or try experiments with the opposite sex to throw off suspicion, homosexual or lesbian it what it is. WTH is bi-sexual anyway? A sex act does not necessarily determine one's sexuality.
[Edited 1/16/12 6:16am] Exactly! This is what I've always thought. I mean someone can be gay but still a virgin. there must be something additional to the sexual encounters they have that defines their sexuality? Tis a complicated topic...

Nah.
He belongs on a "Who is the best androgynous singer/musician of all time" list.

I wasn't gonna say nothing but yeah you're absolutely right. He and Michael. Hell include Freddie in there too (pre-1980).

I mean, the brother called his alter-ego "Camille" and raided Victoria's Secret when he burst on the scene. But people are too quck to call him "gay" when he's really just androgynous.
I think Prince has enough self-confidence (witnessed by him donning the accoutrements secured from those early Victoria Secret raids!) that if he was gay, he'd let us know.
Like most male artists ever, he's in touch with his femininity; probably more so than others.
And I can't believe all the Sylvesters I see on lists; really? Of all time?

That's often the stereotype of what people (even some gay people) perceive to be gay when that's actually inaccurate. That's like saying Milton Berle or Tony Curtis were gay for wearing drag in the '60s. As for Sylvester, vocally, he was alright. He's a disco icon though but yeah I can see why "all time" would be a bit too much.

Right on!
People need to stop associating anyone effeminate acting as being a homosexual. We are not all drag queens and effeminate sissies.
Also Donny Hathaway and Billy Preston along with other R and B singers who may have had one speculated blow job in their lives do not count. Luther and Tevin maybe. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I thought the rules from the OP was pretty easy to understand. It all bout how the artist identify themselves. Theres a reason Liberace isnt a big gay icon in the community. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Yeah, I think he was probably better known as an actor (of sorts) than a singer, but he managed 4 albums and a wheelbarrow load of singles which had different versions etc. then sadly he popped his titties, and he was only in his early 40's I think. Shame, a true original.

When I saw his E! True Hollywood Story and it got to the day he died, I almost cried. Yeah that was a sad day. I saw a tape of his London performance around 1984 just recently on the Tube.

Apparently SOME people didn't get the message. I don't know who would even think Liberace is a icon in ANY community. Just in respect to Liberace but dude was nothing special.

"Best" with no parameters is pretty pointless. "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I can believe it. He's definitely my favorite openly gay entertainer of all time. Not only did he make some great disco, which he was mainly known for, but he could belt out some great slow jams too. He was very diverse. He started out in a rock band and was also influenced by a lot of the divas of the early 1900s. His 40th birthday bash (although he wasn't really 40 yet) showed just how diverse he could be.
But not only that, the man was totally out there and absolutely didn't give a lovely damn at a time when hardly anyone was out there like that. He even recorded songs on his albums openly flaunting his sexuality such as Billie Holiday's "Lover Man (Where Can You Be)", without changing the word "man" to "woman" and during the intro of "Sharing Something Perfect Between Ourselves" he dedicated it not only in front of a live audience, but also on a live recording for his live album, to his male lover in the audience. Then, a few years later he recorded "Menergy". That's pure "in your face" strength that very few gay artists have done in their music. Andy is a four letter word.

And I'd like to add..

Andy, I will admit that I am not versed in Sylvester's body of work at all other than that tune "you make me feel, mighty real."
But c'mon, he's a better singer/musician than Rufus Wainwright, who I think sexuality aside, is wondrously talented as a singer, songwriter/composer and pianist? Wainwright's Release The Stars is a phenomenal album produced by a extremely gifted musician. And as far as I know, he's openly gay.
On a crass note, I'd love to tap his sister's ass. The Lord's my shepherd, he knows what I want.
