interestingly, the song "Holiday" was offered to Patti LaBelle but she turned it down."Borderline" would have surely gone to someone like Phyllis Hyman or Stephanie Mills if Madonna had not recorded it (those artists were also working with Reggie Lucas at the time).
Many black artists recorded pop songs in the 80s. "Let's Hear It For The Boy" was mentioned earlier. That's a total pop song. Just because a person of color provides the vocals doesn't make it R&B.
I think the line between "pop" and "R&B" really became blurred in the 80s.With so many people crossing over into different genres, those lables became (almost) unnecessary and irrelevent. For example....is Janet Janet's 'Control' album a pop album or R&B? Many would say "pop" but Jimmy Jam has said that they were trying to make 'the best R&B album they could make'.

Another example being Boy George's Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? Give a sista that song and it's r&b. Or what about Tina Turner's What's Love Got To Do With It. Ain't nothing r&b about that song yet some people peg it as such and other's label it rock when in reality, it's straight up pop. Space for sale... |

I have never understood why some people call her debut album R&B. I always thought of it as post new-wave dance/disco. [Edited 11/27/11 12:12pm] 2012: The Queen Returns |

the beauty of Madonna's debut "MADONNA" is that it's a mix of R&B, NewWave, Disco and Synth-Music, thus CREATING a whole new genre: 80s DANCE-POP |

If you had been listening to R&B radio in the early 80s,you'd understand why her debut album is classified that way Songs like "Holiday","Lucky Star" and "Everybody" did not sound out of place next to the latest singles by Shalamar,Stephanie Mills and others. |

I suppose, but concerning your earlier post if you listen to Control it has a much bigger R&B vibe to it. Not because Janet is black, rather listen to Nasty or WHYDFML they have a R&B groove to them that is much more apparent (at least to me) than Holiday or Lucky Star.

It seems to me that the general public have taken R&B as a fluid term to mean "Music made by black people"
So who want's to break it down?
what is the foundation that makes music R&B?

Because it sounded like a lot of 1980's RnB
She got serious 'black' radio station play

it's like I said earlier......if you were listening to R&B radio in 1982/83,it would all make sense.Madonna's first album sounds very similiar to alot of R&B songs from that era.The first time I ever heard a Madonna song,it was on our local R&B station (KSOL).They played "Holiday","Lucky Star" and "Everybody" long before the pop stations did.In fact,it wasn't until "Borderline" that the pop stations got hip to Madonna

I agree, and that's why Madonna songs have always gotten air play on the 'black' stations where
1980s was a good time for people to open their ears to various styles of music because of the fusion going on then |

One of my all time favorite Madonna albums. Right up there with Ray Of Light, Music, Erotica ect. From 1989-2003 she was a creative genius. Ashame how it's gone to waste. The title track is definetly the best song. So haunting |

I wish the title track was a bigger hit. I remember hearing it on the radio when it came out but it didn't get much airplay, though I think Human Nature may have done a little better here. I still hear Secret on the radio, and remember what a big hit Take a Bow was. |

Not one of her albums I'm familiar with. Looking forward to exploring it for the first time. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

It always struck me as comical that after she bombed with (what was then) the most expensive video made for Bedtime Stories, she scored with a video that probably cost less to produce than her hairdo.

Human Nature trivia: Madonna's hair isn't black in the video. It's blonde with dark roots but the blonde is covered by strips of black leather in her cornrows.
