Are There Artist You Must Own The Physical Albums For?

As I contemplated getting Meshell Ndegeocello and Kate Bush's new works, I decided that I had to own the physical CD so that I could review the booklet as I listened to the album for the first time. Yet, other artist, I could give a rat's arse about these things and I quie up my Itunes for a digital copy. Who do you have to have the CD or LP of when they release their work?

Mine:

Wendy & Lisa

Kate Bush

MeShell Ndegeocello

Bjork

Janet

Sade

Used to but gave up:

Mary J Blidge

Maxwell

Seal (I just stopped buying the dudes work entirely LOL)

Radiohead (the last one was the first download release)

Prince (again, I just stopped purchasing the work)

(When I mentioned digital purchases, I mean legally purchasing downloads lol )

I still buy physical copies of almost every release, but if I had to convert them all to digital at some point in the future, I'd still keep hard copies of all my Prince, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Tori Amos and Saint Etienne albums.

The new thing with me is seeking out vinyl copies of albums by newer artists I consider very special. They are rare:

Goldfrapp

Dum Dum Girls

The Horrors

The Black Belles

Easy

If I'm a FAN, then I buy the Cds, including the Special Edition if I truly like the album. I want the physical thing, the booklet, the quality of the remaster, etc.

if I'm not a fan, I just download the songs I like, usually 6-7; for example, I have 7 songs of Britney Spears on my mp3, lol

All of them. The only downloading I do is free downloads and that's usually rare and hard to find stuff or old songs that are decent but not something I love enough to spend money on since money is so tight these days. I never pay for a download though. I absolutely refuse to pay for a download.

Yep, this. Plus, there's always the option of selling on a physical copy at a later date... not necessarily for very much, but the option's there. smile And a lot of the CDs that I buy are reissues with extensive liner notes anyway.

But yeah, downloads feel too soulless to me. It's the same as with eBooks for me, having the physical thing is part of the appeal.

True............except I can take a few hundred books with me on my e-reader. It is extremely convenient.

A download is like porn. It's OK if you're in a pinch but there's nothing like being able to actually hold either 7 or 12 inches in your hand. evillol

If it's a band or artist that i'm a fan of, then I buy the physical cd and in some cases a vinyl copy too. If it's a band or artist that i'm not sure about, then I will grab a free download or stream the album if I can. If I like it, I will buy the physical copy.

If it's an band or artist that i'm particularly fond of then I download all the bootlegs that I can get hold of too, radio sessions, demos, live shows etc.

hmmm, noble effort, yes, but when I listen to Britney I just want jams, jams and jams. I don't despise her ballads, but hell I prefer the upbeat dance numbers

It's more than just a ballad, it's Britney's ballad to end all ballads--her "Purple Rain", her "Wild Horses", her "One". The fact that it isn't recognized as such is a travesty.

Yea but only for three people. The beatles, prince, and mary j blidge.
Why does there have to be a soundcheck? I don't have a songcheck. You don't have a clothescheck.

Physical album always. Force of habit.

But then I don't waste money on the trendy stuff.

Liner notes are essential.
I'm guessing that over time, even these will become mandatory with dls.

"I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)" is a good song even if it does bite "Hella Good."

For me that is one area where Britney and Janet are similar. I quite like their uptempo songs but when they try to sing ballads it just underscores how weak their voices are.

I fear the wrath of no stans!

Besides, even diehard Janet fans can admit that she is not a fantastic singer. Can't they?
