Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now

Soul Boy and Golden Soul are okay, but nothing really to call home about. He later gave them to his cousin for the Boogie Box High album

i have the released ones, plus disco, it's pieces and ain't no stopping us now (presumably a cover) that i don't have. got soulboy now, thanks

i couldn't find peices or golden soul, but i found ain't no stopping us now, i had it already. are the other 2 tracks the actual BBH versions or wham versions of the BBH trax?

edge of heaven was really just an EP. the final included most of the new tracks from it. it wasn't released in the UK so i doubt you will get an expanded version of that. expanded versions of the 2 normal albums with 12"s etc would be good though

True but i also put some songs like Blue as i mentioned on my album spot of EOH on my itunes list. To make it more complete and some remixs and thing's.

I think it's cool Wham! only did the few albums they did, that way they didn't get stale... plus it seems most boy bands don't last long after a few albums confused

I think it's cool Wham! only did the few albums they did, that way they didn't get stale... plus it seems most boy bands don't last long after a few albums confused

the thing about wham! is "they" only really had 2 albums, but were one of the most well known defining pop acts of the 80s along with duran duran, madonna, prince etc

and basically wham! is a solo GM project, but for the market he aimed for, instead of going solo from the start he created wham! as a marketable brand, with his good looking (at the time) mate, and a couple of good looking backing "singers". none of them are actually credited for doing anything on any of the records, bar some very minor parts. if you recall back in the day you would think andy had a more important part, but he's hardly credited for playing any guitar and he isn't credited for any vocals. paul wellers wife dee cee lee actually did backing vocals for wham

george is quite a talented musician as well as writer and vocalist, but he really plays that down. you can see from later credits how much input he has on his work. the second wham! album set george up for his solo career with 2 tracks being credited to george instead of wham! upon single release - careless whisper and different corner

so wham! weren't quite a boy band in any traditional sense. as a band they had female members which just makes them a band instead of a boy band

it's also worth mentioning deon estus who hasn't been mentioned so far, as he's a great bass player, and he had a solo hit with a GM written track. the bassline on club tropican in particular is excellent

if they were doing a trawl though the reissue vaults like how ZTT are handling FGTH, i think instead of a specific edge of heaven release, i would do 2cd releases of the first 2 albums with the 12"s, b sides and some rare and unreleased mixes, and then another release that collates the edge of heaven ep plus further remixes and rarities, as i don't think they would have enough to properly flesh out an EP into a 2cd release without duplicating what was on the first 2 albums. essential the wham final uk release was the edge of heaven fleshed out with some remixes and stuff to make what was basically the best of wham at the time, but it duplicated stuff that fans already had, although the remixes added a touch of having something a bit different to what you had before

I prefer the slightly longer (and thus slightly better) single version of "Freedom" that's exclusive to this collection.

Andrew had little to no input on most of the Wham! output. I was looking through liner notes while writing an essay about them. Here's what Andrew's credited for

FANTASTIC

Bad Boys (on guitar)

A Ray Of Sunshine (on guitar)

Love Machine (on guitar)

Club Tropicana (on guitar and cowriter)

Come On (on guitar)

Young Guns (on guitar)

Wham! Rap (cowriter)

MAKE IT BIG

Careless Whisper (cowriter)

and guitar on some of the songs

THE FINAL/Music From The Edge Of Heaven

I think guitar on I'm Your Man and The Edge Of Heaven

and even the guitar parts can be debated because there was always someone else playing too lol

While he rarely contributed to the music, Andrew is credited for the group's image and being a support system for George

yeah, that's basically it, he just does some guitar, but i think someone else is credited with guitar and other instruments too, either that or some of the instruments strangely don't have credits, thus suggesting/confirming other people obviously had to play on them

he was part of the band cuz he was georges pal, but along with pepsi and shirley they created the image. at the time george was a bit podgy and spotty, you should see some of the early interview videos, he's a right bloated piggy ex-teen

co-writer on wham rap is a credit i bet andy isn't hugely proud off biggrin actually i do like that track, and there are other early versions with different lyrics, even the video version is different to the album version. there are a lot more DHSS type references (that's unemployment benefit) on the early 12" versions. there's unsocial mix and social mixes, both 7" and 12"s versions of both, again with different lyrics

andrews solo album was a major flop. i wonder if he was surprised about it

these are cds i made in the 90s. one was as much as vol2 as was around, basically the redhot tracks, plus other studio b sides etc from cd singles and 12"s

the one called outside was named as they were all live single/b sides etc, and i heard the name of the upcoming single was going to be outside, but that wasn't released until about a year later. i edited the crowd noises so everything ran together like a live concert

the version of careless whisper was the rare wexler mix

the other disc had various 12"s that hadn't been released on cd mostly. the photo with wanker is a real photo, GM drew in the sand

i used GM promo cds i had and got he right font and literally created the artwork myself to make them look just like official promo discs

Great set!

I did something similar when CDRs came good, but they didn't look as goods as this. I had discs called

"Dance"

"Live"

"Studio"

I had the same tracks but didn't have "Thirty Nine" Where is that from?

What version is Careless Whisper? The Wexler Demo?

And no "Jive Talking"?

By the way, the use of the "wanker" picture is class!

^ wham at whitley bay - brilliant! if you don't come from the UK you won't know about whitley bay. it was a cheap holiday resort where you usually stayed in a caravan (trailer) or chalet. the UK version of jersey shore was set not far from there. it's "up north" in england so is cold, yet all the girls go out in tiny shirts even when it's snowing and all the guys go out with no jackets. it's near newcastle where i saw prince do the tube tv show and slept rough afterwards in the november freeze. when i was a kid at whitley bay i sang bad boys at the holiday camp talent show, but came second to a young magician

nice artwork. i just wanted mine to look official and they did impress a few people when printed on proper paper. it looks like i did these in 1998, so 13 years ago. i did a bunch of prince "extended edition" discs for all the albums, adding 12"s and b sides and perfect quality outtakes

39 was from the freddy tribute, i took it from i think the vhs at the time as i don't think the dvd was released then, if it was released then it would be from the dvd. it was the GM track not on the 5live cd

careless whisper is the jerry wexler mix which isn't a demo, it was a rerecorded version in a different key with a "live" band (it's not a live in the studio - just not drum machines and keyboards, real instruments) and had it's own very different video that's extremely rare. it was a very limited edition 12" that goes for a good few bob. i think it may now be on the deluxe edition of 25

when i did this i was a perfectionist and didn't have a cd version of jive talking, plus it was a GM set and it didn't quite fit with the other material on the disc from the GM era, and no space left on the disc after my choices

one day i'll revisit vol2 now i have the missing tracks. i padded out the rest to make a 80 min disc. both discs sound really great to listen to in a great running order. i use artistic license with my discs to make them sound listenable instead of strict chrono, but keeping in with the artistic original intentions. my beach boys smile disc which also emulates the original sleeve is another great disc

I've done a couple of George, Prince, MJ, various artist compilations. I may print them out and put them in actual cases to see how they look smile

HohnerCatcher

For some reason I thought all those same videos already appeared on either The Best Of Wham! DVD or TwentyFive's DVD, but "Young Guns" and "Bad Boys" aren't on there. I never noticed before! eek

And why do I already have two copies of The Final on CD? lol

Wham! / The Final / 25th Anniversary Special Edition

November 10, 2011 by Paul Sinclairtags

Wham! / The Final / 25th Anniversary Edition / CD+DVDWham!
are back on 28 November with a 2-disc anniversary edition of The Final, their farewell compilation album, from 1986.

The pop duo of George Michael and Andrew Ridgely went out on a high 25 years ago, with this exceptional record that documents a short, but amazingly successful, career in pop. The Final contains six UK no.1 hits including both George Michael solo singles (Careless Whisper and A Different Corner). In addition to the standard 14-track CD, the forthcoming deluxe edition will include a DVD with 13 fully restored videos (one short of the audio selection, since the track Battlestations didn’t have a video).

Wham! / The Final / 1986 Box Set

The 'super deluxe edition' of The Final

Back in 1986 Wham! were unwittingly early pioneers of the Super Deluxe Edition, since The Final came out as a limited edition (25,000!) box set, which included double gold LP, a calendar, a t-shirt, and a pencil and Wham! pad. Nice!

Wham! / The Final / 1986 Box Set

Inside: A t-shirt, two gold vinyl LPs and more

Nothing on the album is exactly obscure, but for your enjoyment we present a lively walkthrough of the tracks on the record, with the odd bit of trivia thrown in for good measure!

Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do?)

Not a hit in June 1982 when first released, but was subsequently re-released in January 1983 (after Young Guns (Go For It!)) when it reached no.8 in the charts. Wham Rap! was rather political in a very simplistic way. The message was clear, working is for jerks. If you don’t enjoy what you do just stop “Cos the benefit gang are going to pay”.

It’s the 12″ version on The Final even though it’s only labelled as such on the vinyl version. In fact the 7″ version has never appeared on a Wham! CD since the 12″ version was on the first album Fantastic. An ’86 remix [Wham Rap '86] was included as part of the 7″ double-pack and the 12″ of the last single Edge of Heaven. It’s also on the American compilation Music From The Edge of Heaven (a cut down version of The Final).

Young Guns (Go For It!)

The second single but the first hit. It reached no.3 in late 1982. Again, it’s the 12″ version on The Final

Bad Boys

George Michael is on record as early as 1984 saying he “hates” this song. It’s the only Wham! single not on the 1997 The Best Of Wham! album, however it was present and correct on The Final back in 1986 which is not surprising since it was the biggest hit from their debut album, reaching no.2 in May 1983. The 12″ version is on the original vinyl of The Final but the CD is the standard version.

Club Tropicana

The fourth and final single from the Fantastic album, reaching no.4 in the charts, in the summer of 1983. The b-side Blue (Armed With Love) was a rare example of George Michael putting a high quality new track on the flip-side of a single. This was recognised by it’s inclusion on the cassette and LP version of The Final, although it was not on the original CD and nor does it appear on the 25th anniversary re-release. This is a shame because it has only ever been issued on CD on a rather obscure Japanese CD single of Club Tropicana. Blue (Live In China), a significantly reworked live rendition, did appear on the US Music From The Edge of Heaven.

Wake Me Up Before You Go Go

The band’s first number one and the first single from the second album, the appropriately titled Make It Big. There was no 12″ remix and the b-side was an instrumental. A classic pop song of the era.

Careless Whisper

George Michael’s first solo single was on the Wham! album Make It Big, but released in the US as Wham! featuring George Michael. A transatlantic no.1, the version on The Final is actually the full length version, which also appears on Make It Big. Jerry Wexler originally produced this track before George decided to remake it himself. The Wexler version was given an official release, briefly, on the flipside of a limited edition UK 12″ but has never been released on CD (see video below for this rarely heard version).

Freedom

A third number one in a row from Make It Big, Freedom was Wham! at the peak of their powers. There was a “Long Mix” 12″ version but the on The Final it is the standard mix albeit with a unique ‘outro’ when a trumpet comes in.

Last Christmas (Pudding Mix)

A double A-side with Everything She Wants, Last Christmas topped a ludicrously successful 1984 for Wham!, and George Michael in particular. Only kept off the UK no.1 spot by the Band Aid, Do They Know It’s Christmas? charity single, it sold over a million copies and is apparently the highest selling single in UK history not to get to the number one spot. The 12″ “Pudding Mix” was for years the de facto standard version of the song, appearing on The Best of Wham! in 1997 as well as The Final. In fact it wasn’t until 2006 that the standard 7″ mix appeared on a Wham! /George Michael CD (his Twenty Five greatest hits album).

Everything She Wants (Remix)

Another remix which replaced the standard 7″ mix on all the compilations. It’s easy to see why, since it’s far superior to the standard version which a whole extra verse at the end. George Michael has been quoted as saying that this was his favourite song from the Wham! era.

I’m Your Man

Back to the top spot, in late 1985 with this standalone single. The Extended Stimulation 12″ version was on the Vinyl and Cassette of The Final but not the CD. The US compilation Music From The Edge of Heaven actually contains a unique remix which is very similar to the Extended Stimulation mix but doesn’t have the silly voices talking about ‘magic cars’ in the middle, and instead maintains the 7″ structure at this point. The cassette single contained an acappella version of the song and an instrumental called Do It Right was also on some formats.

A Different Corner

Another solo George Michael single makes an appearance on a Wham! album. A no.1 (what else) in April 1986. There is a version of this track with an extended string intro but that is only on Music From The Edge of Heaven. In fact that version is not even on the UK 12″ single which just contains the standard 7″, the same as The Final. The instrumental version from the b-side is unreleased on CD.

Battlestations

One of the new tracks on the 7″ double-pack and the 12″ of the last single Edge of Heaven. A great song, Battlestations gave the best indication as to the direction George Michael would taking his music post-Wham!, with a fairly sparse stripped down approach and drum machines. Very Prince-like. This track could easily have been on his first solo album Faith.

Where Did Your Heart Go?

Another new song, this time a solid cover of the Was (Not Was) song. It again formed part of the final E.P. although it was released separately later in 1986.

The Edge Of Heaven

The final single predictably hit no.1 in the UK charts. It managed to keep the effervescence of earlier Wham! releases and was actually a really strong single to end on, even if it did feature a somewhat unnecessary guitar solo, that may or may not have been played by Andrew Ridgely.

So there we have it. There is nothing not to like about this compilation. Wham! were once pop royalty, along with bands like Culture Club and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Yes, they could be a bit silly, with the shuttlecocks, “Choose Life” T-shirts, day-glo teeth and the ‘Lady’ Diana haircuts. This was the 80s don’t forget. But the songs have stood the test of time – great pop songs – and that is what makes the difference. 1997′s The Best of Wham! missed out Bad Boys and had awful updates of some tracks (Everything She Wants ’97, I’m Your Man ’96 – urgh!) so The Final remains the people’s Wham! compilation of choice.

Wham! The Final 2-disc 25th Anniversary Edition is released on 28 November on Sony. Pre-order here.

prince did the greatest romance and baby knows at the tube. he played live guitar but everything else was prerecorded as he wasn't happy with someone during baby knows and they did a reshoot to film closeups of the band without prince. i bumped into prince backstage before the show and spoke to him, then when he got onstage i spoke to him again, asking him loads of questions

the day before the tube he did TFI friday and did baby knows and prettyman (off air but broadcast at a later date), playing live. i was there too
