Aretha sings at same sex wedding in NY Aretha Franklin Sings At Gay Wedding
Aretha Franklin came out to sing at the wedding of a high-profile gay couple in New York on Sunday night (23Oct11), four months after the state legalised same-sex marriages.
The music veteran was the star guest as the former Intrepid Museum president Bill White married his longterm partner Bryan Eure at Manhattan's Four Seasons restaurant.
Franklin performed a number of her hits at the reception, including I Say A Little Prayer and Respect, and she ended her set with a rendition of I Will Always Love You, according to the New York Daily News.

Yeah, but her views have been confusing on the matter. In her book she had a reference to James Cleveland and his man staying at the Franklin home in an upstairs bedroom.
Most of the 'divas' have largere than life followings from homosexuals and lesbians - but that does not equate in their tolerance, acceptance or understanding of such.

Aretha Franklin asked for two things before she performed at the grand wedding of former Intrepid Museum president Bill White and Bryan Eure Sunday night at the Four Seasons Restaurant -- a $250,000 fee and the air conditioning to be turned off so the room would reach a steamy 86 degrees to keep her voice perfect. Of the money, White said: “This was not the fee, which we agreed with Ms. Franklin not to discuss. Whatever her fee was, the Queen of Soul was worth every penny."
I think there is a good chance that she performed for free or a nominal fee. Just my feeling. |

On her sophomore album Mahogany Soul (J Records), soul siren Angie Stone took a bold step in releasing as the first single "Brotha," a high-powered, urban anthem heralding the strength and honor of Black men. She fearlessly risked rejection from mainstream audiences to motivate Black men and put an end to "brotha-hating." But some of Stone's fans believe her empowering words of praise only apply to straight Black men.
On August 18 of last year, Stone, 37, performed at the South Ward African-American Street Festival in Newark, NJ and allegedly made offensive statements toward gay Black men. Stanley L. Crawford, a gay Black man who attended the show, says Stone introduced her performance of "Brotha" by saying, "I want all of my strong Black brothas to put their hands up… Homos, put your hands down!"
Crawford says mouths dropped as the 400-plus crowd looked on in silent shock. Crawford kept his hand in the air and came anxiously close to walking out on the show. "I was really shocked that she would say something like that," he lamented, "I felt like somebody had slapped me across my face."
Stone claims that she does not remember the show but adamantly denies making the statements, stressing that "Brotha" applies to all Black men. "I'm like, if you're gay, stand up. If you're a strong brotha and you're gay-it doesn't matter to me. Stand to your feet," Stone said, "I really think there is just someone hating, player-hating."
"Rhonda," a straight Black woman who prefers to remain anonymous, also attended the show and was taken aback by Stone's alleged insults. "I was very disappointed by [her statements], actually, because I like her as an artist," Rhonda admitted. "To make a song like that in support of Black men and then to negate that-I didn't understand that. We're all one family."
Don Johnson, co-owner of Black Explosion Getaways, was planning to hire Stone to perform at Winter Explosion 2002, an annual black gay and lesbian ski weekend held each February. Johnson heard about the incident and reacted immediately by calling off negotiations with booking agent Brian Dickens of B D Management, who had been dealing with Stone and her management staff on Johnson's behalf. "We will not book an artist who [publicly] speaks anti-gay rhetoric," Johnson firmly stated. Johnson ultimately secured R&B soulter Ann Nesby for the event instead.
Stone maintains she knew nothing of the pending booking and never heard of Winter Explosion 2002. In the past Dickens has booked Stone for numerous shows, some with gay and lesbian audiences, and this show would have been no different. "There never was any conversation or concerns about performing for a predominantly gay-oriented event. She's done it before," Dickens said, "She's not a homophobic individual."
This kind of intense drama is nothing new to Stone. She's already survived the heartache of broken relationships, maintained hectic schedules promoting her current album and her 1999 platinum-selling debut "Black Diamond," while still carving out time to raise her two children. Today, she lives by a motto that she dedicates to her gay and lesbian fans: "Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see."
Still, Crawford and Rhonda refuse to buy Stone's CD or attend her shows in the future. For Stone, the future includes a European tour in March and another set of dates in the States later this year. Stone further insists she has no problem performing for gay and lesbian audiences, and she says she'll tell audiences at future shows that "Brotha" is for all brothas.
"A brotha is a brotha at the end of the day," Stone affirmed, "What you choose to be and how you choose to live your life is your business. It has absolutely no bearing on anything. As long as you are happy with who you are and what God is doing in your life, who the hell am I or anyone to challenge you for it?"

Aretha is from that old school church despite that I don't think she seriously has any views different of the average person on this topic. Aretha is Aretha! Plus that book is kinda uhm old correct?
**As for Angie,I NEVER heard of that. It seems like hearsay and I wasn't there. I just hope she didn't say that. |

The black dude from 'The Love Boat' dropped the B-word like it wasn't nothing on that show! My mouth dropped quite a few times watching that show. I'm not saying Angie is a saint but I have a hard time listening to hearsay especially w/o a pattern of 'that' behavior. |

Wow! I've supported Angie ever since she stepped on the scene with Vertical Hold. I wish I can verify for sure whether this actually happened or not. I would hate to continue to purchase her music if that's how she really feels. She is a black R&B singer, which means she probably has tons of gay fans so to say something like that would be sort of career suicide for her. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! People may choose to lead a gay lifestyle, but they certainly don't choose to be homosexual. I get sick and tired of people calling it a choice or a preference. Did she choose to be heterosexual?

Angie was a complete idiot for saying that in 2002, if she said it. That is my only comment.
As for Aretha, it's very possible that she once had beef with James Cleveland. Remember, the fact that James was on a down low throughout his whole career as a church pastor AND a traditional gospel recording artist was definitely a controversal issue among black churches in his timeline. |

I mean, if she was homophobic, I doubt she'd allow her baby sister Carolyn to live with her since Carolyn was reportedly a lesbian (Their father, who was homophobic, kicked Carolyn out of his house after he found out). Plus she worked with (closeted) Luther Vandross and (openly) Sylvester in the past. George Michael ring any bell too?  I'm sure she know she has gay and lesbian admirers. But I'm sure she had mad problems with those who say one thing but do another (like James Cleveland). |

Interacting with lesbian women & gay men are too different things with some former and/or current homophobic individuals. At least Aretha grew up a lot sooner and didn't allow her father's homophobia to influence her.

Yeah, if you are in the music business and you work with or collaborate with someone who's gay doesn't mean that you are not homophopic. The music industry is crawling with gay folk so I'm sure every artist, no matter what their feelings on the subject, has worked with a gay person. I don't see any artist telling the head of their label, "I'm not working with so-and-so because he/she is gay". Executives don't want to hear that.
