All things considered,I'm glad that the Commodores reunion never happened. The Lionel from those days is long gone. There's no way to make him "funky" ever again. We;ll just have to play those old records and enjoy the memories wink

You have to remember that most of The Commdores' funk tracks has Walter Orange on lead vocals, NOT Lionel Richie. Walter was on lead for most of the funk & disco tracks, while Lionel was on lead for all of the slow romamtic tracks.

With the Commodores, Lionel was on lead only for Sail On, Zoom, Three Times A Lady, Easy, Still, Oh No, Lady (You Bring Me Up), & Why You Wanna Try Me.

I get what you're saying, but Lionel was still funky in those days lol He would do his country-flavored ballads one minute ("Three Times A Lady"),but on the same album,he would be singing something like "X-Rated Movie",lol. He mixed it up.

Well he produced a whole album for Kenny Rogers in the 80s, so this isn't surprising.

Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

How did Lionel go from that to Dancing On The Cieling? DOTC always sounded like a soda commercial to me.

The only real funky song I think he was on was "Slippery When It's Wet".

That's dude singing lead on "Old-Fashion Love" too. But "Clyde" is the best overall vocalist the band has ever had.

I, more than likely, won't be purchasing his new album but I usually think it's a good thing when a Pop/R&B artist steps outside of their comfort zone and tries something different. I've never thought it was a good thing to be pigeonholed into a certain sound/genre.

He lost his songwriting finesse on solo album # 3, Dancing on The Ceiling.

I remember buying the album and screaming bloody murder over its astounding banality.

Several years ago,I bought the remasters of Lionel Richie,Can't Slow Down and Dancing On The Ceiling.I only bought DOTC for collection purposes but I ended up re-selling it lol That album is a soul-less snoozefest. The only good song on it ("Love Will Conquer All") is a rip-off of the superior "Love Will Find A Way".

Hell, why not Mr. Richie music and career was flushed down the toilet a long time ago. He couldn't be any worse than the manure being made and pushed out in Nashville currently. Richie should workout though.... I think to be taken seriously in CW circles nowadays you must have abs to go along with the hat. wink
