Thanks for the info. Just listened to it on youtube. (it's still on youtube people!) I never liked Hot Street so I knew I wasn't gonna like this one...but still thanks. By the way which one is the original version of We Be Ballin? The one with saxophone sound or the other one?

It's a nice listen. I think Hot Street/Slapstick always had potential to at least feature as a B-side. MJ did say they did a demo for Rolling The Dice. I'd love to hear Rod's vocal demos for these records...

The Girl Is Mine, Billie Jean, and Beat It were surefire hits (although The Girl Is Mine is absolute MOR pop)
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' is a great song and was climbing the charts at the time that the Motown 25 special aired and peaked at #5 the week after the show aired in May
Human Nature, PYT, and Thriller though could've used some b-sides to entice the consumer into buying them because for anyone in 1983 who was buying the albums, those last 3 singles didn't offer anything new.
Human Nature's bside could've been Niteline (and an instrumental)
PYT's bside could've been the instrumental that leaked in '09 and Carousel (and a 12' mix)
and Thriller's could've been Got The Hots and Hot Street "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

That's exactly what I would love to see released too "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I think MJ should've released a video for Human Nature. I swear I had that whole concept in my head .. Got the Hots and/or Hot Street would have been perfect b-sides for the Thriller single. Behind the Mask would've been a perfect fit for a Billie Jean b-side

Whenever I see that small clip in Moonwalker I think.....
WHY DIDN'T HE DO A VIDEO FOR HUMAN NATURE?!!!

Interesting. My ideal choice for b-sides would've been Sunset Driver for PYT, Groove of Midnight or possibly For All Time for Human Nature and Got the Hots for Thriller..

DUDE! My ass had the whole concept written on paper! It was so detailed! Now if only I can transport back to 1983 and deliver the message, I'd be like

Groove of Midnight was written in 1986-87 so we have to disqualify that record.
For All Time sounds too much like Human Nature (as they were written and produced by the same people) so it would sound like one long record.
For All Time would've made a nice b-side to something more along the lines of Lady in my Life, PYT or Baby Be Mine

That "For All Time was originally from the Thriller sessions" was BS. One of the writers said it was written for Dangerous. I assume Michael just wanted to release it and decided Thriller 25 was the right opportunity "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Me too! I came up with mine awhile ago
ANIMATED (with pictures of Michael blended in like the Moonwalker clip) picture of Michael sitting in his New York apartment bedroom, sneaks out to the city, he explores the sights. He thenmeets up with his friends, go to a get together. While at the party, he meets a beautiful girl, spends the night with her and wakes up at his house to see her smiling at him near the window with the sun beams hitting her hair and skin
Wouldn't it be crazy if they made a full clip for Moonwalker then decided just to include that small part? "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Another leak
A unreleased version of 2000 Watts surfaced. It's the same song but without the vocoder so Michael's voice isn't as low as in the album version "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Now you know there had to be an early version recorded maybe AFTER Thriller was mixed and mastered. Mj was tryna be slick with that, like we wouldn't notice

That's like my idea! I'll water mine down a little bit just so I won't type everything
Mine took place in a NY apartment also with MJ just walking around his apt bored, then when "If this town is just an apple" line comes, he at his balcony looking down with a mischevious look on his face and he goes out and just explores the town.
Knowing MJ, i'm sure he had a lot of scripts and storylines lined up for so many videos but never got around to using them.

It always trips me out how from October 1982 to February 1984, Michael did just ONE live performance and just THREE videos (not counting Say Say Say) for this album and it blew up the way it did. Like he said, he pretty much sat back and let the album do it's thing
For Confessions, Usher had to tour, do videos for every single, re-release it a couple of months after it came out with more songs, appear on every show, perform at every award show, be on every magazine cover and the album sold 10-12 million.....but who still listens to Confessions though? "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Michael's sold by word of mouth of how brilliant the videos/the album in general was... plus radio played more than anything. Michael being OFF TV did real wonders.

Interesting... someone said that they didn't think Michael's voice was really that low on the track, guess this confirms it.

Yeah, tell Beyonce that
I want to hear 2000 watts!!!!

Anybody here wishes there was full audio of these kinda songs? I mean I know they were done for the Jackson's Variety shows and stuff...but man what I wouldn't give to have Michael singing Irving Berlin or George/Ira Gershwin. His voice in it is just so smooth...and his dancing's always divine.

Yes, agree. In fact, I have put some of those Variety show performances from YouTube on mp3. Of course, sound quality is crappy. I think the version of Blues Away is better on the Variety show than album. Sounds more jazzy.

BTW guys, someone is uploading the full Variety episodes on youtube in a very good quality. Here's one:

I bought the entire Jacksons Variety Show series on dvd last year on eBay. PQ is similar to a VHS. Somebody really needs to officially issue this on DVD or Blu-Ray if possible.

THRILLER SINGLES
This is what frustrated me during the Thriller and Bad era. The single choices were on point but they offered nothing new to people who already had the album - no b-sides or remixes. Of course I bought every one as they came out but I used to get annoyed that there wasn't anything new on them for the most part - an occassional instrumental of Thriller, but never anything unreleased. That said though - it was a semi-smart move - if I had heard Carousel or Slapstick as a b-side I would have been like, 'really? You were considering this?'
At least by the time Bad came around they started doing extended mixes.

I wouldn't say it was all word of mouth. I feel that Thriller's success was mostly based on MTV airplay. Also, radio played the hell out of every track on the album, with or without singles. I remember "Lady In My Life" and "PYT" getting LOTS of airplay in my area not long after the album's release.
