New Van Hunt Album is the Prince Album We Still Wait For. This is Van Hunt's Dirty Mind. Raw. Explosive. Emotional. Would love to see them collaborate. I will run this record in the ground. Explore with me. Album: Feels like 2011 Hendrix and where we expected Prince to be today. What impresses me most is the high level balance between music, lyrics, emotion and originality. I really like Moving Targets. I think Van's work deserves more attention than it gets.

I like Van Hunt, have to check this out... Thanks! Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

I totally agree with this one. Van Hunt outdid himself on this album. Prince's arrogant ass should listen to it & take notes.... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

Saw him the other night with Empress Hotel. He put on a far different type of show than he did when I saw him in 2006 but no less entertaining. I'm waiting to have some time to sit and listen to the album rather than just putting it on in the car or at work. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Prince does NOT need 2 take notes from anyone making music in 2011.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yes he does, That's his problem. There is tons of good music being made today, you just have to look for it. Prince does need to hear other music to inspire him to try some new things. I just think that Prince needs to get out of his own world, get the "yes men" outta there, & re-discovered himself... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

you are kidding right. What did he do so special.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
No.
Prince's issues have far more 2 do with his religion controlling his art than outside influences like other artists.

Exactly. الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

This is exactly what's wrong with Prince fans. I should have never mentioned him in this thread.
...btw, Van Hunt made a consistently great album. Prince hasn't done that in at least a decade & a half. الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

Not me. Prince has had his run and has made some great records already. If he doesn't come out with another record EVER, its okay with me. And even though I give Van props on being experimental, this ain't my favorite Van Hunt CD.

This album is not the Prince album we still wait for. Prince can no longer put out a 1999 or Parade. He's exhausted the source of his talent; I would simply be insane to expect him to put out an album better than Parade (Prince's best album, in my opinion).
What Were You Hoping For? is the album we were expecting from Van Hunt; not Prince. The two are discrete satellites orbiting the same planet (black art music). But they are certainly discrete. This album is exactly what I was expecting after Popular: expecting to not have my expectations met (I like Kierkegaard so I like paradoxes). I wanted Popular redux: he told me he can't be boxed in and will not stick to a blueprint. Awesomeness: The nigguh is too cool for school.
Prince does not have the influences necessary to release an album such as this; that isn't a good or bad thing. It just means that Prince did not listen to the Stooges or the MC5 and Hunt did, who was capable of melding it to his Mayfield and Stone influences. There's some Monk tossed in there if you listen carefully too. What Were You Hoping For? is a tour de force in my opinion and simply the album of the year.
Is it better than Parade though.....?........? I can't call it right now.

I like Van Hunt but I can't say this is "the Prince albume we still wait for." Van Hunt may have been influenced by Prince but he makes his own music. And as much as I like Van Hunt, I can't find all that much in this latest album to compare to Prince. Better to compare Van Hunt's music to his own. Ultimately, I agree with you.
The only reason why I personally mention Prince is because we are on a Prince board and I think as far as "black pop art music" goes, Parade is tops. What Were You Hoping For? is a serious contender though.
But I think you are right.

If a person were to take the strongest material from Prince's last three albums would we have the Prince album we have been waiting for?

This feels like a game changer. Van Hunt morphing into one of those legends that will now forever serve as a reference point to countless other works.
I'd swear "Moving Targets" saw directly into Marvin's soul, then wept at the recognition that this was indeed an original. "What Were You Hoping For?" is a question Curtis Mayfield masterfully attempted throughout his short life. The epic baton has been secured for limitless future races. "It's a Mysterious Hustle" sounds as if George Clinton, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Prince collaborated on an epic finale that would burn so fiercely, so extravagantly, so masterfully that it just might aspire to tame all the wildness heretofore. It worked. Of course all the expected royal ascendancy is present and accounted for (and perhaps even slightly lesser ones like Missy Elliott and Terence Trent D'Arby), but with increased familiarity it feels more and more like I'm sitting amongst the crowd of one. And staring across from this seemingly intimate peer, his independence sure seems to fit like the designer duds of some master tailor. At 34, Van is already well behind most giants. But what a jumping off point he has created for himself. Greatness never dies, nor is it ever completely original -- it just freely passes to anyone willing to work hard enough and get fortunate enough combined with their talent to tap into its original waves. Van's radio surely now sounds attuned to this rarest of all frequencies. ===== Addendum: We shall see when Van Hunt is 53 if people are still saying he can't make a fucking record like "What Were You Hoping For?" anymore. == Tweak. Tweak. == [Edited 9/28/11 23:18pm]

No,... if we were to take the strongest material from his last three albums and add them to some amazing shyte that makes that stuff look like filler material...THEN we'd have the Prince album that we've been waiting for! By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Still haven't listened to it, but I can accept this as insightful.
If Van had arrived in 1978 in Prince's place, this site may very well have been named Van.Org.
If Prince had had to deal with what Van has had to deal with, he may still be working to find an audience. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I feel for any truly great artist today. You can't fit this kind of beauty alongside the superficial narrowness that is today's commercial landscape.
