Go Head Tony Bennett! #1 Album At the Age of 85!

Tony Bennett Hits #1, Beats Demi Lovato and all the Young Kids

09/27/11 3:33pm
Roger Friedman

Tony Bennett’s “Duets II” comes in at number 1 this week. It sold over 166,000 copies according to hitsdailydouble.com, beating Adele, Demi Lovato, Lady Antebellum and all the kids in the top 10. Bennett is 85 years young, so this some achievement. The only older act out there right now is Doris Day, who’s having a hit in the UK and soon here with her “My Heart” album. Bennett almost got himself in trouble last week with odd comments about 9-11 he made on the Howard Stern radio show. But the combination of the album’s strengths, Bennett’s good will, and the pr effect of his 85th birthday celebration at the Metropolitan Opera really helped. He’s also getting a pr boost from Amy Winehouse’s final recording. Congrats, Tony! “Duets II” is on its way to the Grammy awards, and probably Album of the Year.

You can't help but love Tony. Not that I am interested in his new album. If I wanted something I'd get one of his older recordings

BTW, Alec Baldwin's impersonation of him on SNL last week was awesome

Amy sounds likes shes drunk and in a well, Gaga is trying to copy 3 earlier diva's verisons of the song instead of making it her own, Lord Im not clicking on anything that has Mariah on it and the kd. lang duet is just boring. confused

This doesn't surprise me at all. I've always said that the taste of the majority of today's younger generation is the same taste as senior citizens so why shouldn't he be number one?

That's great. I was a little worried there would be a backlash against him because of his 9/11 comments.

Congrats to Tony! I've been listening to it on Spotify. The SF Giants had an appreciation day for him yesterday. Even though it was preplanned, it was perfect timing.

This cat is lucky that someone died so he can pimp off it and promote his new hack duet album.

He is Frank Sinatra-lite minus the star quality.

Saw him on "The View" with k.d. lang (who sang him under the table)... I felt like throwing the TV when he was all "i wish i could have talked with amy"...

Now he's all "she knew she was going to die".. PLEASE. This old fogey barely knew her, gave her the stack of cash, sang her song and was out (Remember the SNL bit with Frank's duets?)

I hope when he dies someone rides him to the bank too.

Congrats on #1, Tony Bennett. For shame.

Well it was a no-brainer he would do this , i mean Tony always sells, hes like Manilow and Boccelli, Bubble, Groban etc...he was pretty much a shoe in, to either take 1 or 2. Though Demi Lovato can sing and its actually a good record, whats lost is that she actually had her biggest sales week ever too, plus she is coming off the whole "shes fat" shit. PLUS for tony this album is going to sell from now through the season, dont be surprised if this becomes one of the biggest albums of the year next to adele.

However all that said i feel its unfair if this gets nominated as a BEST ALBUM, mainly because its old songs, re-done, that to me is unfair. Its one thing to get a performance nod but album, sorry, it would be like nominating a greatest hits album

Right on Tony!! He should be very proud in this age of talentless people selling millions of records.

He is a real singer with real talent.

Honestly I expect older artists to top the album charts. Barbra Streisand nearly did with her latest and give props to Doris Day for having a number-one album in England of all places. smile

But it depends on who the artist is and what genre they sell to, Bennet, manilow, Streisand and Neil Diamond are pretty much doing similar work though Manilows last was back to new music thank god, but someone like say Daryl Hall or Rick Springfield aren't going to top charts with their new music or maybe not even chart.so I think it's more about the music they do

I think it's because people like Daryl and Rick were pop megastars in their day and therefore like most '80s pop artists, they're not gonna get the same support as a Bennett or a Manilow...

true but its also the music because Manilow did a more pop/rock album this time and though it was Top 10 it sold no more near his "covers and standards" records did. Rod Stewart can top the charts with covers and MIchael Mcdonald can do Motown but if either cut a new rock record, they would see about 75% of their audience gone.

Although I like Sinatra. I always thought Tony had/has better pipes. Congrats! I bought the CD 2 weeks ago not because of Amy(Although I liked her). I have his boxset too that was given to me on one of my birthdays. True Living Legend.

Barbra debuted with her 31st (!) top ten album "What Matters Most" in the number four position on the Billboard chart. She's the only artist to have scored number one LPs in five consecutive decades. Go ahead, Barbra! biggrin

Exactly. Frankly, the surprise would be if he didn't top with a new album.
