Sax is doing fine IMO, I know a bunch of sax players who work. One was hired along with a few others to back up The Black Crowes just a couple years back.

But it's a horn section, not a cheesy dirty sax rock solo

well, yeah it's not thriving as a rock instrument, but the horn players I know all seem to make more money than me, the singer/guitar player

As for popular music, I think Katy Perry and Gaga are trying to bring them back, but I don't see it catching on anytime soon. There are so many songs I hear on the radio that could use a good sax solo.

This thread is about 10-15 years too late LOL. I havn't heard sax in a pop song (which is what I presume JoeTyler means) since Whitneys "I will always love you". Iam sure theres been a few here and there, and of course as mentioned, there was Gaga's "edge of glory" which was cool and different for her to do, but otherwise, its been dead since the early 90's. It's heyday being the 80's.

I've got songs where I guess to myself "is this gonna be a sax solo or a guitar solo?" LOL. Which reminds me that guitars have been gone in pop music since the El lay session draught after the late 80's. Again theres been some guitar in pop music, but not like it was.....

Eh, I think a lot of the saxophone solos of the eighties were pretty bad and did not serve the songs very well. For me that is when the instrument started to go downhill in the context of pop music. The use of saxophone in the eighties kind of became a cliche and I'm not surprised that by the late eighties/early nineties it was basically dead.

I say screw the saxophone, I have always preferred trombones and trumpets anyway.

Damn the sax was such a funky instrument. I love the Sax solo at the end of Super Freak. It really shows how saxes can be the funkiest and sexiest instrument.

Well, what do you think are some good eighties saxophone solos? When I think eighties saxophone I think "Careless Whisper" which is a bit icky.

I guess I just prefer it in the context of jazz/R & B. In pop music it often seems like a bit of a novelty.

For me I never thought that the saxophone fit with the sound of eighties pop. Much of it was fairly cold and sterile and then you would have a saxophone solo, it seemed fairly incongruous. Groups like The Specials and Madness that regularly featured horns sounded fine but most of the time it seemed like a novelty.

man, too many the sax and the guitar owned the 80s

the songs that I posted are just SOME examples...

I kind of dig the saxophone on Aerosmith's Night in the Ruts album and Guns N' Roses' "Move to the City."

'60s and '70s R & B I can dig the saxophone.
