Van Halen ~ Dreams You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I'm not into Van Hagar as much, but I've always liked this song a lot. It's the one I like the best from this lineup. I think Van Halen (and Eddie specifically) gets a bad rap for their keyboard driven tunes. Jump got overplayed no doubt. But the songwriting on the 5150/OU812 albums gave them the opportunity to elevate themselves a bit above the other metal/party bands "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

'Dreams' was written when Dave was still in the band. The working title was 'Melancholy'. I wonder how things would have been if he stayed. There a definite shift in the sound after his departure. Guitars were tuned a half step lower with Dave in the band because of his vocal range. Release Yourself

As a diehard VH fan at the time, I tried so hard to believe in it. But when Dave left, the band lost all sense of artistry to me. I think this is schlock.

I would LOVe to hear what this might have sounded like with david lee roth. Even the name 'Melancholy' is much cooler. There was much complaining/commentary about DLR's vocals between the van halen brothers - that dave had to overdub practically every line he did. But you know what? 95% of all the songs they did with him were fantastic.

Damn, i LOVE this song, probably my fave from Van Hagar, 5150 and 0U812 were solid F.U.C.K and Balance started to go downhill. I saw them support Bon Jobi and they blew them off the stage. She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo

Fuck that... F.U.C.K and especially Balance are the better out of the 4 Van Hagar albums. [Edited 9/19/11 10:41am]

Agree. 5150/OU812 are the better of the four...FUCK has its moments but overall disappionting. Balance sucks.
I love Van Halen with DLR...1st album and Women and Children are two of my fave albums of all time. I liked Van Hagar, and at the time actually listened to 5150 more than any of them...but time hasnt been kind to Van Hagar, where as the DLR albums are aging incredibly well.

Always dug the 5150 album a lot..and while it's no question to me that Van Halen was only Van Halen with DLR, they made some pretty decent songs with Sammy Hagar at the mic...When It's Love being one of the prime examples!
But Fuck that, nothing beats vintage Van Halen
