I don't disagree with her influences from Prince, David Bowie, Roisin Murphy, Kylie, Grace Jones, and everyone else, but to even call Madonna a minor influence is straight out denial.

I definitly agree with this.
The problem with Gaga is she has all these influences but she is lost with them and tries to hard instead of just showcasing HER TALENT. She would get ALOT more respect from me if she just stopped the wardrobe antics and stick to her music.
With Madonna influence on her, Gaga tries to go for that same shock value and controversy but she fails at it because it is only a gimmick. With Madonna, that is who she was. She pushed peoples buttons and experimented with different things that were shocking for its time.
Obviously, Gaga is just going for what sales and sticking to what works. Changing her wardrobe and wearing ridiculous shit gives her that attention she wants. Sadly it does nothing for her music

Well, yeah. But I think her biggest influences are Madonna, Grace Jones, Roisin Murphy The rest also a bit. But mostly these 4 womans, IMO. [Edited 9/8/11 7:44am]

Exactly! beauty of many songs? lmao.. her songs are not special at all, it's just normal mainstream pop/dance music, and yes they don't sound bad, but they are not special, not experimental or anything like that. Yes I do agree some of her lyrics are way better than most mainstream artists in top 40, but that's it!

Appearance wise, Madge was a big influence. Music style wise, no.
Also said earlier, Madonna has amazing lyrics but not much more. Lady Gaga is better with music than M. Gaga is pretty bad at writting lyric though

I liked Madonna in the 80´s and 90s but I also think that at some point she sold out and just took the right producer and the right sound just to score hits. But I don´t understand the whole GAGA hype...really, I´ve seen a lot of hypes and "stars" the past 30 years and I don´t know why she would stay, be remembered or be succesfull for a long time. She´s like the boy bands from the 90´s or the Justin Bieber hype these days....it will pass, amen.
And Madge? well ok, she deserves 2 be an icon... for the hits and albums like Like a prayer [Edited 9/8/11 12:42pm] Love4oneanother

I think any musical skill Lady Ga Ga has is outweighed by her lack of originality. She's like a Las Vegas Madonna tribute act with a wardrobe malfunction.
Sure she's a passable pianist but she can't actually write a tune that doesn't sound like someone elses. She's not bad or anything and there's songs that I can listen to in a club but there's nothing of any real depth.
As for the shock tactics Madonna wins hands down as there was always a deeper argrument to what she presented no competition. Just take religious blasphemy Judas vs the Like A Prayer video (no contest).
Judas... Just a generic play with religious iconography
Like A Prayer... A comment about racism in religious iconography and how the effects of that bleed into society and the justice system.
I don't mind Lady Ga Ga like I said some good club tunes that still have a few years play in them but she needs to step up her game and delve a bit deeper if she wants to stay around as the outfits don't get as much press anymore
It's been 4 years and she's released the The Fame album, Which she rehashed 3 times (original/5 bonus trax/remixes) and is already on a dissapointing showing with her second album
In the same time Madonna had released Madonna/Like A Virgin and True Blue

I love Madonna and Lady Gaga, but this is just getting ridiculous. If what Madonna said came off as she thinks Lady Gaga is obsessed with her, then I'm sure it's not what she really meant. Also, Lady Gaga shows influences from MANY different artists, not just Madonna, which many people just don't seem to get. This "Lady Gaga is copying Madonna" thing has gotten to extreme and, dare I say, fanatical heights. Could it be that Madonna didn't take any legal action against Gaga for "Born This Way" because, just maybe, she doesn't hear any similarity in the song to her own "Express Yourself"? Or, if she hears any similarity, maybe she thinks it's too miniscule to even waste her time with, and laughs at how the whole world is seemingly in an uproar about it.
Gaga has given Madonna many props, so why so many people are always rabidly eager to equate anything she does from walking to breathing with anything Madonna has done, is doing, or will do is just baffling. It's like they have something at stake by comparing the two women. I'm sure Madonna doesn't spend her every waking moment wondering what Lady Gaga is up to, and vice versa. Gaga is obviously a student of tons of music icons, from pop to rock. She's a student of the arts. She's "obsessed" with everything from Springsteen to Warhol. She's like the talented lovechild of many, many artists.

I just believe Madonna was misquoted. The media wants to start a beef. Neither lady would give them what they want. I don't see Gaga ever trying to start beef with another artist.

i second this. i'm still looking for this great talent of gaga's..... so she plays piano. so do i and plenty of other people whaaaa. i will say that she seems more madonna and elton in turns. that anyone mentions her in the same sentence as prince, bowie or mercury is ridiculous to me as a lifelong music geek and OFFENSIVE as a devout follower of those 3 mentioned.
and even with elton... there is no other and he didn't come out of the gate have naked with sirlion strapped around his waist or shat out of a pod after 3 yrs/ 2 records in the business. gaga seems like the courtney love w/out the nirvana train. the ugly-ish girl that always wanted to be pretty and popular and will do whatever she has too to get someone to notice her and invited her to sit w/ the cool kids in the lunchroom.
no thanks

Well, for starters, girl can sang.
She writes (whether you think it's good or not is a matter of opinion), she can dance, and yes, she plays the piano. She may not be Chopin, but how many other girls in her specific genre (Britney, Christina, etc.) do you see on stage playing the piano?
The thing is, there is no "Team" whoever, because there's no beef. It's media-made, just like this ridiculous "Gaga is copying Madonna" thing.

thanks for the vid i hadnt seen it bfor. i didnt mean to suggest that she is w/out talent just that theres nothing so great about it. like i feel about beyonce- what's so great about her? it is just a matter of opinion i agree.
oh i think you'd be surprised about how competitive these folks can be... this is just the first time, that i know of, that it's been put around, imo. Prince #MUSICIANICONLEGEND

Well I guess all female pop stars these days can dance then

Well, she's no Janet in the dance dept., but she can definately move. If you want a pop diva who couldn't dance if her life depended on it, look at Mariah.

So u think she can move because she's at least better than the worst pop dancers? I just don't think it was necessary to say that she can dance. She's got other talents like u mentioned and to say that dancing is one of her talents is just [Edited 9/8/11 19:39pm]

I think she can move because, well, she can. She's not a bad dancer at all. Look at the videos for Bad Romance, Love Game, Just Dance, etc, and you'll see that she has skills. I think she's actually quite good at choreography. Her dancing is just one part of the whole, not something that stands on its own. In the dance-barometer meter "Get up off that grey line"

Really, while Lady Gaga may be more talented, she's basically singing showtunes over dance music beats. Madonna's music is far more interesting and throughout her career, though she has not shown much in the way of singing, she has definitely been entertaining. Gaga comes off as a pandering clown most of the times these days. When she first dropped, she was unique but now she's just weird and overbearing.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Better than Christina? I beg to differ. Gaga has a choreographer, Laurriane Gibson. (pretty sure I spelled her name wrong) I don't know if u watched the show "DANCE SCENE", but she comes up with skilled complicated choreography for other pop stars, who actually CAN DANCE. But for GAGA she always comes up with something simple and easy, like honestly....I think if you're somewhat flexible, u can do it too.
And that's just technicality talk. She just doesn't deliver the emotion right through dancing. Christina is a lot better dancer imo.
