"Sly is overrated, sorry. Most Amy Winehouse songs are better than any Sly song." I know Freaky was just messin' with you Smooth, but that was absurd to see such a crazed statement in writing. ("Most Amy ..." well, which ones Freaky? Break it down, let's really talk about it.)

Stevie owned the seventies but he wasn't close to being it's most influential.

I do give the purple one credit for emulating Sly's genius in format and concept, but when it comes to lyrics and enfluence of other musicians, no one came close. <img src=" />

Sly Stone was a 60's act. Stevie is the most influential artist of all times, his music is recognized by all genres and walks of life. confused

I'm not sure what influence Stevie had on this: lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

You're welcome. I don't like that threads expire after two months here. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I see that it might be necessary to shut down something like the MJ sticky after a certain point, as it always goes on forever. lol That can be closed by the mods though. But for other topics about less popular music, multiple threads have to be created, when one will do.

Me either, I read so many old threads and learn / get exposed to new information and music and I can't acknowledge the poster due to them expiring.

Thats too easy thinking for me. Maybe within his own field, the crossover of soul / funk and rock he was the greatest, but within other styles other artists were 'the greatest' to me.

I dont know enough about Stevie Wonder music, so its hard to judge for me, but...

When it comes to soul singers.. i go with Marvin Gaye.

When it comes to pure funk.. i take George Clinton over Sly Stone.

When it comes to female singer-songwriters.. i go with Joni Mitchell

When it comes to male singer-songwriters / folk artists.. i go with Nick Drake

When it comes to rockbands... my vote goes to Big Star.

When it comes to my best all-round artist (in terms of songwriting, vocals and music) .. i go with Van Morrison

I think you cannot say there is a single best or greatest artist of a certain area, because artists are active in such different musical styles.

Im a Stevie fan, but he hasn't influenced anyone of the afore mentioned during the seventies. Sly's influence is evidenced in house, jazz, soul, rock and rap as well as appreciated buy rock bands such as Aerosmith, Heart , and Maroon 5 to name a few, even Prince and the late MJ have indorsed his influence.<img src=" />

Sly peaked at Woodstock, but without a doubt he influenced Stevie's change in music styles. Marvin standing up to Berry on "What's Going On" also played a part in Stevie's change as well.

Like Paul Simon said in '75 or '76 at the Grammys, "thank you Stevie for not putting a new record out this year".

I feel that the "High On You " lp was one of his better lp which was released as a solo album in '75 however , I also understand what SoulAlive was saying as well. His influence was still present many years later much more than Stevie as far as music is concerned.

They're both influential, indeed.
