Erykah Badu OR Jill Scott. For real. do it!

I looooove Jill.

Her debut album and her 3rd albums are both classics in my collection. "My love is deeper/tighter/higher/flier..."

"loose like bowels after collared greens"

"love rain down, down on me"

"Crown Royal on iiiice"

man she is the JAM!

Not sure why her most recent release put me to dentist chair sleep and her sophomore left me cold-ish (minus "Betta at Home" and ESPECIALLY "WHATEVER!!!") but I love her for everything she stands for. I love her love of flesh, food, naughty pleasures and her deep sensitivity and her jazzy voice and her spoken word 'raps'

...but obvi I vote Badu. I'll say it: better production, less predicable on and off stage, tighter albums, more innovative songwriting, the moods, textures, the funk n soul and outright batshit nutty lyrics...she wins.

imho this is a MUCH fairer comparison than Badu vs Lauryn.

Junkie, this one is just wrong. At least we should consider having an artist having only one challenge at a time. Erykah is still puttin' it down on Boogie in this board. Dang. sad biggrin

I like Jill but I own Badu CDs and downloads. While both are into the arts, Jill is a poet and Erykah is abstract. That dosen't take away from Jill's talents but I'm only alloted 24 hours a day, I need to make some time for her music.

Jill.

I don't own a lot of music.... (too cheap). I own a few Eryka downloads... mostly her hits. I have 2 of Jill's CD's and downloads from the others I don't own outright. I have her on my iPhone.

Jill speaks to me... the way Teena spoke to me. Eryka is a little too political for me at times. I don't know... I love to hear about love relationships, self worth, self realization etc. I don't care to hear so much about "the game" and life's struggles.

One thing, both women love and support the brothers. Just express it in different ways. Jill is on a very personal basis, love for HER man; where Eryka, I get a sense of love for the "brothas" as a group.

Jill turns the whole equation on its head. She is the relatively shy and compelling, unasuming one. She can pull you in by suprise the way she unfolds her smile and her songs. And don't think she isn't working hard at what she does.

Erykah, no question. I love majority of her music.

Jill is a cool artist, but out of all of her songs, I've only ever liked one, and I can't even remember the name of it.

I saw them both in concert so I'm gonna base it off that since they are equal as far as albums goes.... Jill Scott is the best of the last decade. Erykah can't sing in key or in tune like Jill can. Erykah can't throw in a jazzy riff or break out into opera scaling like Jill can. Erykah can't give you music from the 20's through each decade like Jill can. Jill serves a musical gumbo thats completely her own and shows that she is not only a student of the game but also a masterful teacher.

Erykah's live shows are decent but she needs alot of improvement. I enjoy her being spontaneous though.

Prince = WIND
Chaka Khan = FIRE
Sade = WATER

I absolutely love them both but I will give a nod to Erykah for just being "out there". You just never know where she is going to take you on her musical journey and that is fascinating to me. As a live performer Erykah can be uneven at times but I have also seen her give incredible shows. Erykah is not your everyday chick but that is what makes her interesting to follow. She can be flighty, witty, introspective and funny with deep messages all at the same time.

Jill is an outstanding singer and I was not crazy about her at first until I saw her live and I said "damn". She just calmly walked out to the mike and started singing living my life like its golden and blew the roof off the place that night.

Followed both from the beginning of their careers and have seen them live multiple times. Jill’s vocals are outstanding but she is becoming more and more the type of artist who I think is good but doesn’t really do anything for me. However, Erykah continues to intrigue, give me goosebumps and keep me nodding my head recorded and live. headbang

I disagree with some suggesting Jill is predictable. She is a very creative artist. Maybe she hasnt experiemented with different genres as Erykah has but she isnt predictable.

I dunno... when I think of an artist who is predictable it is not really a good thing and it is boring which Jill Scott isnt.

Well Jill has a nice style, and a great voice. She writes very well and her songs are not always about love, but sometimes even about the world around her..like someone said above on a personal level. Her music is most at time calming. Erykah too started off in that same way, but has consistantly been almost militant in recent years..a 'voice of the people' type artist. I like her more because she not only isnt afraid to test the funk and hip hop genre's but almost at times create her own sound..."Gone Baby Gone", "The Healer", "Master Teacher"...really cannot be put into any category.

I feel like Erykah is more in control of the vision and sound she has for her music. Not that Jill Scott is not; but she just has not pushed the boundaries of soul still...even though she is ahead of the game and is good at it.

I really can't pinpoint what it is about Jill that's why I just chalked it up to her not being for me because I do think she's good and I still enjoy her music but she doesn't move me the way she once did. I also thought maybe she'd be a little bit more adventurous over time. Maybe I just have a different connection with Erykah. After all, EB is one of my fave artists, hands down.

I can agree with this to and nicely said wink

It just seemed like some were suggesting Jill isnt creative AT ALL when that isnt true and she is better than all the pop tarts out now. I guess on this arguement alone... I have to go with Badu as well even though I LOVE Jill to.

i really liked jill's first album and the live album she did. haven't been blown away by a single of hers since then. she could blow live though cool. not that crazy about baduism, but i've checked for every album after that, especially mama's gun and the first new amerykah. her voice is just classic, mesmerizing. so i'm with badu personally twocents
