As hard as it is, I gotta take Badu. Her last two albums are the deciding factors. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Jill. Who else.

why it take me all this time to realize that lauryn hill was not part of the conversation. damn! I really am the only one who still likes this woman. aw poor lauryn.
Anyway,
I like Jill Scott's voice better than Erykah's voice but I like Erykah's lyrics better than Jill Scott. Jill's music teeters on some sort of self-ridicule or need for acknowledgement. I get a bad vibe from her songs sometimes; like she is yearning to be loved. Erykah could give a damn if you love her or not because she loves herself. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. Erykah. It's all about space, which I dig. Inner, outer, lateral.

Jill's lyrics do focus a lot on that theme, but I don't think that means she doesn't love herself... If you listen to songs like "Womanifesto" she's saying, "I am all of that, so don't get it twisted"... and "I Need You" which says, "I am a lot of things, but there are some things that only a man can take care of."
I like Jill Scott because I think she's honest about loving, and I can relate to her lyrics. She sings about "Girl Power", but doesn't give the illusion that "I don't need a man". Some of us are doing fine but would still like to share our lives with someone. Self-sufficiency and relationships do not have to be exclusive.
I have to be honest: I can't speak about Erykah's lyrics after her 2nd album. I have the third, but I had tuned out by then.

Love them both but on this one Jill comes in ahead for me. "I know that living with u baby, was sometimes hard...but I'm willing 2 give it another try.
Cause nothing compares....nothing compares 2 u!"

This is hard. Jill, to me is the technically the stronger singer-she can BLOW. But Erykah is the better lyricist. BUT, I will have to give this to Erykah, because she has a chill vibe and although I don't agree with her dropping crumbsnatchers like cats have kittens and her many baby daddies, she doesn't have the hateful, bitter vibe that Jill seems to have. Now this is true. One of Jill's songs... sorry I don't know the name related a story about how she was crazy in love with a man that has moved on and Jill had resorted to stalking him and breaking the windows of his car. And she is left wondering how did this man or actually her obsession of the man broke her down to that. She does come off as a little "need to be loved".
Eryka comes across as "hey, let's see if this thing called love works and if it doesn't let's have fun trying it out." No desperation in her songs... sometimes frustration, but never needy.
and that is something I aspire to. Jill has a finger on where I've BEEN... Eryka vocalizes where I WANT to be.
But I still tip off to Jill. I don't have as much in common with Eryka (that I have heard). I don't deal with men that deal, I don't ever even consider commiserating that even though I have a man, that I can't have that other one too.
So I guess I find myself judging Eryka's pov (not saying that she is singing about herself). Jill... we are right there... eye to eye. I can relate to her. I'm Jill on some songs, my sister is Jill, my sistas are Jill. I really don't know any Eryka's. Jill is the girl next door, Eryka is that bat shit crazy girl down the street with mad attitude and style.
My opinion. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

At first I was going to ask you what bitter vibe... but then I got a flash of what you are talking about. I think Jill loves harder. I think Jill falls in love so hard there are times she loved THEM as a couple more than she loves herself. and when it doesn't work out... she is hurt and pissed... cause she gave ALL OF HERSELF... that is what that song was about... my love is higher, tighter, lighter... DIDN'T YOU KNOW THAT???!!!!
I don't think Eryka has. She has never lost herself. I don't get that in her lyrics. Even when involved with someone else... she is checking out another man close enough to realize that she digs his vibe... and would like more... but dang too bad... I'm already with someone else. I will say that Jill came with it with this new album. "So Gone," "Making You Wait," "Missing You," pack a punch. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Erykah has a free love, wild child vibe; Jill has a serene sister but will act bananas if you cheat on me so I'll stalk you and burn all your shit vibe.
I'll go with Erykah over Ms. Bernadine, er, Jill.

This is hard. Jill is good, but she's like yogurt, an acquired taste. Badu is a bit more interesting to me. I want to know what their both singing about, but just a bit more curious with Badu. I love to figure out what she's trying to tell me. Her voice is sweeter. Jill is certainly the stronger singer, but I think Badu has a slight edge over lyrics.

Who is Bernadine? Erykah is a bit too earth mama for me. I like people who are not so alternative-but I do like her music "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Bernadine-Angela Basset's character in Waiting to Exhale that burned all her husband's shit. Thank You San Alejo for getting rid of my enemies. :-0

I gotta admit, the kid's right on this. Jilly's debut is a monster (easilly in my top 3 debuts EVER)..but Badu has had better complete albums.
Also, after hearing Badu SHRED that cover of Chaka's "Stay" on her live album....holy shit.....had no idea that lil lady had that kind of range (check it out @ 3:51). Jill can't do that. Funk Is It's Own Reward

Okau, now you have piqued my curiosity. I am going to have to take a closer look (listen) to Ms. Badu. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

Yep, she ran like Carl Lewis through "Stay." I appreciate it more than Chaka's original. But that amazing LIVE album also has a version of "Apple Tree" that will knock your got damn socks off.
In Dave Chapelle's Block Party there is a scene with Jill backstage watching Erykah perform. It is windy and Erykah's wig is in a crisis moment and she just pulls it smack off her head. Jill is thrilled by this little move, has a little giggle and lets us how much she "loves that girl."

I did see that Block Party. I remember that scene. It is one of the reasons I love Jill so. She is so real and down to earth. None of this competition BS like the scene between Anita and Micki. Jill and Eryka are competitors yet none of this cattiness. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack
