lol, Then it's not so interesting in the end. Though I am unsure how you have managed to "never hear a song by this woman" given her hits have been ubiquitous, I'll go along with it. That being said, if you -plan- on continuing to avoid the person's music, -how- did you come to that conclusion without hearing -any- of her music? lol

rolleyes

My feeling is that Michael's presence was felt everywhere! He felt like the king of pop, everyone knew him and his songs. Whereas with Kate Perry, yeah she's hot now as a pop star but I only know two of her songs and i'm quite sure many, depending on demographics don't know who she is or is not that familiar with her believe it or not.

Well, that's the whole frightening point! Katy Perry and her auto-tuned ilk are as much of a product as Elmo is. But Elmo is more talented. lol

Her "music" is shite.

Looking at Billboard Top 40... it's all shite.

So glad I'm not DJing in clubs anymore...

It's official, I'm old. All the kids' music sounds like crap to me! "Back in the day we listened to real music by real musicians!" Blah blah blah.

This is what happens when American Idol is the arbiter of talent.

What does American Idol have to do with this? They have had 2 or 3 actual sucess stories to speak of in a decade of seasons.

Naw, it's not cause you're old, it's because it's true. I think a lot of the "music" today all sounds alike, has no melody, harmony or real instrumentation used at all. I just looked at the top 10 ringtones in the nation right now and was stunned to see that NONE of the "artists" listed is actually a musician at all. I mean come on, even terrible bands back in the day had to have some grasp of music. Now, we have Rihanna? It sucks (and I'm not "old" at all)

Trolls be gone!

I only know Firework and California Girls.

I can't honestly cheer for what is no longer an accomplishment in this day and age. Popularity is bought like any other commodity. Her music is not very deep or impacting and most likely ten years from now, these songs will be just a faint memory of a good time for todays jr high and high schoolers. This is the era of instant fame, where people go on television, are given t.v. shows and become famous for doing absolutely nothing other than yelling and being an attention whore. It just shows that the science of promotion is effective.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would realistically compare Katy Perry to Michael Jackson in terms of talent.

When it comes to record sales, it is simply a measure of how many people were convinced to buy a product at a given time. It has no bearing on the quality of said product.

Not to take anything away from Katy but have you seen the competition on billboard these days? LOL in the 80's and 70's and even 60's you had much stiffer competition on the top 40.

Now as there are so few actual record companies left, they push and push the few artists they have to satuation point. Of course companies have always done this, but now theres fewer stars then ever now it seems to break out (cuts in new artists I presume doesn't help either).

Even as recent as the late 80's you had breakout stars on smaller labels like Virgin, SBK, A&M, Capitol. All of them are gone. And thus less artists to compete with making it easier for the very few left to market....

...Theres much more to it then that, but the lack of smaller record companies actually finding new talent, meaning lack of competition certainly makes it easier for the very few that do make it, to make it BIG!

Anyway I hate stats (or at least bragging about stats) but good for her. Though that "ET" song was crap LOL.

Keep in mind that this is the era of Beyonce (who is having some problem selling her latest album 4 lately!), Lady Gaga (who hasn't had another Top 10 hit since Born This Way), & Rihanna (who made history of her own by have 25 Top 40 singles thus far). Katy Perry is not having all "easy" like talking about it.

And I still say that Ke$ha.......oops, I mean Ke$hit is trash! lol

Its easy if you don't listen to the radio. At least Tony knows three. I only know two. The internet is killing radio and television simultaneously. When you can customize your musical experiencces, why would you bother with music you're not interested in?

The "masses" think American Idol is good and the performers are talented. They must. They watch it. In fact, it is the opposite of the spirit of rock and roll. How anyone, much less kids, think it is good, I'll never understand.

Since AI's inception, Billboard's Top 40 has gone from mostly crap with a few good artists to all crap. The industry doesn't want to cultivate artists that may one day get big enough to no longer need them. The industry wants talentless hacks that are easily replaceable with another talentless hack.

Katy Perry is a symptom and an example of this problem.

If you disagree listen to her all day and watch AI every week. I'll pass. biggrin

The thing for me is as of yet I havent heard a peep out of Katy, its almost like she doesnt care that she has had 5 number 1s on the old billboard charts. Its almost like she gets its. Likes shes just having herself a great time living her life. Like chart numbers dont matter to her.

How real.
