First off this is VS thread is just plain evil
I will have to say Songs because of how innovative the sounds where, and the diversity of the stories and lyrics. But What's Going On is not far behind both are absolute pieces of artistic beauty. I actually think Songs would be better if he had trimmed the fat lol
Stevie seemed to be inspired by a lot of shit in the two years he made it. I think he originally intended to do a world album. "Ordinary Pain" sounded like it could've been a Wonderlove track but again it also sounded like Rufus & Chaka Khan (Khan was supposed to be on it but Shirley Brewer, the lovely woman in the glasses from the classic Stevie '74 performance tape, is singing on it). "Ngicuela" sounded like it might've been part of something Stevie was developing and the "Something Extra" EP sounded like Stevie was doing another album.
Maybe that's why he put it all together and simply called it Songs in the Key of Life. He signed a $13 million contract prior to doing the album so he was under more pressure than Marvin was when he created What's Going On. |

On that note... ok you migth see it lol. But i also thought Jesus Children Of America sounded like it could be on What's Going On... and it almost seem's like a tribute to that album! but that's just my warped mind Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Stevie was heavily inspired by Marvin when he created Innervisions actually so you do have a point. |

The Something Extra EP is due to Stevie making Motown and the people wait so long for it. The album was pushed back countless times due to Stevie still working on it and getting it just right. I appreciate and love Shirley but I wish Chaka could have made that session. She would have tore it up!!! He had Minnie Riperton on backgrounds so she could have delivered as well.... just thinking about that makes me wonder how that would even sound
I don't know of any fat or high quality filler on Songs, I think it just takes musical mind to truly understand the scope of it. Sometimes an album can be so perfect that people start to look for cracks and flaws that aren't there Stevie Wonder = EARTH
Prince = WIND
Chaka Khan = FIRE
Sade = WATER

No. It wasn't. Ebony and Ivory was simply about harmony among the races and was written long before Lennon had been killed. In fact, Paul released a solo version of the song in the U.K. about a year before his version with Stevie. Paul, DID write a song, that paid tribute to John called, "Here To Day". Both songs appear on Paul's album "McCartney". "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth" |

I love love love Marvin and What's Going On is a true masterpiece. That being said, Songs in the Key of Life is the choice for me. Thankfully, I can have both whenever I want. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis |

Very appropriate comparison thread. The two so called 'masterpieces' of these artists. I have to go with Songs In The Key Of Life, because of its versatility. I consider Innervisions his best though. |

I'll say What's Going On. I find it much more cohesive and it sustains its mood the whole way through while Songs in the Key of Life is a bit messy and some of the songs go on a bit too long. |

For my money, SITKOL is far and away the best double album ever. Not even close. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis |

Nah I actually didn't. I wasn't being sarcastic.
It's up there though as a double album. But I actually think in terms of CONCEPT, "Journey into the Secret Life of Plants" tops it. |

Yeah with some albums you could tell when it's too long or not. WGO was a perfectly produced album in comparison. |
