Was Madonna Janet Jackson Rival During The 80's? I don't really think Whitney could get down with Janet like Madonna could.

I wasn't around, so I wouldn't know, but in my opinion Madonna has NOTHING on Janet.

Of course it was Jan. I remember watching one of Madonna's backstage tour around 1987 and one of her dancers mentioned Janet. You should have seen her face. LOLS!
If only Cyndi had a more longer career, it would have been really interesting to see how it would have went down. Whitney is not that interesting to me. I dont know if Madonna was ever threatened by her. ~Time Spent Learning is a Time Never Wasted~

I think Whitney and Janet were the two big female African-American artists of the 80's, and Janet was known for starting to break out of the Jackson family shell, which would continue as she would work harder. I really believe her performances at award shows and her world tour sealed the deal, and that's when the Madonna/Janet comparisons may have started. By then, the music scene of the late 80's/early 90's was dominated by female acts too with similar styles alongside these two such as Paula Abdul, Karyn White, Taylor Dayne, Jody Watley and so forth and these two were the leading acts.

They're so completely different from one another that I never compared them in order to see them as rivals in the first place. I thought they were both cool. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

She has had a continuing career, she was just not as popular by that time, and also was doing acting.

No, it was Lisa Lisa. Or maybe Sade & Jody Watley. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. I think Janet and Madonna were competition as far as the music and performances were concerned. As far as the charts and worldwide it was between Madonna and Whitney, both were tied for seven #1 singles in the 80's, the most for a female and were big album sellers.. In the black community it was Janet,Whitney and Jody.

I love this picture Michael is in his heyday and Madonna looks genuinely thrilled to be in his presence.

^^^ Well their fans think otherwise, overall they were competing with each other because their careers took off around the same time and although they were different they were still the best female "entertainers" and they were able to be successful touring acts as well and maintained popularity through the 80's,90's and even found sucess in the 2000-2009 decade as well. Let's not forget Paula Abdul, she was definitely more of a direct competitor as well during her short little era.

Madonna's had several 'rivals' throughout her career. The first was Cyndi Lauper during the days of her first few albums; then as that one tapered off, here comes Whitney and Janet; then Paula was added to the mix; then Mariah and Celine.
