Heavenly! Shall we call Voodoo a classic now? It's been 11 years later and it still smokes. This cut proves it. music

nod One of the memorable and engaging soul records of the era. 5 years in the making and so much history behind it. Voodoo is D's finest moment on wax. As for James River, I'm not looking out for it anytime soon.

Yeah, he really did it with this one. This is the definining moment of the so-called "neo-soul" movement. It's unfortunate that the album isn't better known to the general public.

And yeah, I doubt James River will come out soon. But I'm still keeping the faith. lol

It's a masterpiece. I remember that, when I listened to it, I thought: "This is the best Prince album in a whole decade!". Of course, you can hear many other things there, not only Prince, but it was very Prince-influenced.

I think Prince reacted to it somehow with The Rainbow Children. Actually, I don't know which one I like more, Voodoo or The Rainbow Children. Hey, this could be a good vs. thread? lol What do you think?

Ya know I'm all about music enduring time, and every year since the release of that album, it has gotten better and better.

Funny thing though is, I used to be one of the "I wish he would quit mumbling and just sing his throat off" crowd and I was also on the fence when it comes to the sparse production, now I would change neither of them. In fact, I always manage to discover new details whenever I listen to the album, I think he, ?uestlove, Pino, Dilla, Saadiq and them really showed their asses as far as the production and even the mixing of the album.

I got so obsessed with the album last year, I had to seek the outtakes/demos, and just as I predicted, they sound great, even if some of them were incomplete ideas.

This is one of the albums from recent years that I wouldn't mind having a double CD set "Legacy Deluxe Edition".

Not a big DeAngelo fan, but i'm remotely curious to get Voodoo. never heard it. i remember it not being well received and not "accessible" enough (same criticism Maxwell got for Embrya) as his follow up to the successful debut. i wasn't deterred by critics, i've just never really got into D.

Embrya vs. Voodoo?

I like Maxwell, but I'd take Voodoo over Maxwell's entire discography. It's that good!

This is one of the albums from recent years that I wouldn't mind having a double CD set "Legacy Deluxe Edition".

Mixed by Russell Elevado who did a stellar job on this and on other works by people such as Nikka Costa.

And he recorded it too, ALL TO TAPE.

Sounds soooo thick, smooth and goood!!

Thanks, I wondered about that.

I got the feeling that they(Russell, Dee & Ahmir) mixed this with "There's A Riot" in mind. There're similar things between the two projects.

Embrya vs. Voodoo?

I didn't care for it as much as I cared for the debut, but that's just my taste. I think it's a good album, but not something that I would listen to on the regular.

I know a lot of people that felt the same way I did in the beginning, then about a year or 2 later, they fell in love with it and now consider it a classic.
