A Salute To Grunge

I am in a grunge mood all of a sudden! growing up Grunge, funk & blues where the playlisy of my younger years. And although i overplayed a lot of Grunge artists i still like to occassionally pump out there cd's and jam.

Grunge played a big part in my teen days (Nevermind was published when I was 14). I was a sad guy sad. I'm still kinda sad cry, but I don't relate to grunge anymore, with some exception. It seems to me a bit pompous, there's little subtlety in it.

My favourite grunge records are from the years when grunge was decaying: Pearl Jam's No Code and Screaming Trees' Dust. Also love Nirvana and Hole. But not much more.

I'm sorry, the first response isn't a very positive one wink. But I'm sure there will be many grunge lovers in the org.

ahahah it's cool man just your opinion wink

I'm still young so i guess i can still relate a bit to some of the grune themes, but yes Pearl Jam's mid 90's and 2009 album Backspacer are tehre best. And that is as you mentioned after Grune passed away. Screaming Trees, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney & Alice In Chains are the only bands to make good grunge past 95 imo

Sweet lord Jesus, I hated Grunge, it was so damn depressing. Which isn't to say that I don't occasionally like depressing music, but done more in a Nine Inch Nails sound, with like a funky-ass beat on the back or something like in "Eraser".

Definitely the best IMO. Only Chris Cornell could rival Scott Weiland as a singer to my ears, but the songwriting prowess of the DeLeos and Weiland put them on a different level. They could be heavy, but they didn't neglect melody and harmony like a lot of their peers. I consider "Interstate Love Song" to be far and away the best grunge song ever written.

I mean they where a good band who where unfairly labeled ''fake grunge''

But then again so was Pearl Jam even though they where Mother Lovebone before one of the first Grungy bands BEFORE Nirvana. Scott does have a good rock voice which he used well in Velvet Revolver to!

I could never really get into Pearl Jam because Eddie Vedder's voice grates. I would always laugh when people would claim STP was copying PJ and think, "That doesn't matter when STP's lead singer is a billion times better!" I gained a new appreciation for EdVed when he performed with one of my musical heroes, Neil Finn, but I still can only take him in small doses.

You can't really be suggesting that STP has anything on Pearl Jam. Whether or not you like Eddie Vedder, the rest of the band is immensely talented from Stone Gossard to Jack Irons. I would never, ever choose to hear Scott over Eddie, and I'm a fan of both bands.

STP is just alright, though. They didn't cover any ground that other bands were not already covering. Some of their shtick was very, very canned. (Think "Big Bang Baby" and "Trippin On A Hole In A Paper Heart")

When you talk forefathers of grunge, you mention Eddie Vedder, you mention Kurt Cobain, you mention Billy Corgan, but nobody mentions Scott Weiland cuz he's basically the male alt-rock equiv of Lindsay Lohan.

I'm not suggesting it; I'm flat out saying it. I never said Pearl Jam wasn't a talented band, but I like STP better. And I would never, ever choose to hear Eddie over Scott, so there's that.

STP is just alright, though. They didn't cover any ground that other bands were not already covering. Some of their shtick was very, very canned. (Think "Big Bang Baby" and "Trippin On A Hole In A Paper Heart")

shrug Eh, I love both of those. Most things at this point have been covered before. AFAIC, they did it better and that's what matters most.

I don't care about forefathers of grunge; I just care about what I like. Nirvana is a distant, distant second to STP for me. Despite liking some of their songs, listening to Vedder and especially Corgan for extended periods of time is very much like nails on a chalkboard.

I have a personal relationship with Ten like no other album, I forgot about Gn'R, MJ, INXS et al overnight after I'd learnt the words.

Temple of the Dog's got lost in the mix.

My word, when Eddie comes in at 1:09 he sounds amazing.

I mostly agree with this(bit mean to Weiland though), but Chris Cornell and Layne Staley are more closely linked to grunge than Corgan. Some of the flak STP took over Core certainly applied to the Pumpkins with Butch Vig having been brought in to produce Siamese Dream. Not saying it was contrived, it's an awesome album, but Nevermind obviously figured.
