Ouch... the best? eh i wouldn't even put them in my top 10 grunge bands but i do love there first few albums.

Definitely the best IMO. Only Chris Cornell could rival Scott Weiland as a singer to my ears, but the songwriting prowess of the DeLeos and Weiland put them on a different level. They could be heavy, but they didn't neglect melody and harmony like a lot of their peers. I consider "Interstate Love Song" to be far and away the best grunge song ever written.

I am right there with you. I have most of the catalogs of the "big" grunge bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains) but Stone Temple Pilots are the ones I listen to the most. They may not have been there first and they may not have had the most original sound but they made great songs.

nod At the end of the day, that's what it's all about.

I mostly agree with this(bit mean to Weiland though), but Chris Cornell and Layne Staley are more closely linked to grunge than Corgan. Some of the flak STP took over Core certainly applied to the Pumpkins with Butch Vig having been brought in to produce Siamese Dream. Not saying it was contrived, it's an awesome album, but Nevermind obviously figured.

You wouldn't consider Gish a vital grunge record? As much as Bleach??

Not as vital, because Nirvana came to define grunge in the mainstream, the 'alt-rock' moniker was more common to the Pumpkins primarily cos they weren't from Seattle.

Gish had totally slipped my mind, also produced by Vig so I was reaching a little.
