I've heard the theory, too that some of the record co's thought it was cheaper to produce pop and R&B music without a live band or studio musicians.
BUT....There are rock bands who do play instruments and work with the same (or even lower) budgets than what a record co would spend on a pop or R&B release.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

When R&B singers began to take on the personality of rappers, they began to make themselves increasingly obsolete.
When R&B singers began to adopt the sound of rappers, they became less distinguishable from MCs.
When they took it a step further and began to collaborate with rappers on a regular basis, they eliminated the need to collaborate with other singers.
When the voices began to be whittled down in favor of the beats and the rhymes, more singers began to strike out on their own. Why share the mic with another siinger when you hire the hot rappers of the month to record your albums?
The R&B singer, by and large, took on the rapper's style, the rapper's sound, and the rapper himself. Now he's much less likely to highlight his voice as a solo act. Much less as part of a singing group. Heck, a lot of MCs sing on their own albums, and now the singers are the accessories.
Rap music is like junk food to R&B music. It often tastes good, but eat too much of it too long, it can kill you. [Edited 8/5/11 10:11am] Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

She had IT. However.. some dirty plots and schemes were done for her to get to the top. It wasnt JUST her drive alone. PERSONALLY, not ONLY was Flo more beautiful than Diana she had kick ass vocals. I am surprised they didnt invest in her in her solor career but instead messed her over.

I used to believe that theory. But for some reason after "Unsung" I changed my entire viewpoint on what happened with Florence. She was a strong (and stubborn) woman that hated when things changed, especially when Diana start to want to take control of the group (which technically is what Motown did) and then later going solo. Plus Florence was caught between a rock and a hard place between wanting to salvage the group and not wanting to kiss Berry's behind. Motown DID offer her a solo contract from what I read but she refused to be associated with Motown and her career suffered as a result.

I have never looked into Unsung and your probably right because no one is perfect but all I know is Diana didnt climb to the top all by herself. Some messed up things were going on and Flo noticed it and I dont blame her for not wanting to be apart of something that wasnt right. I just thought Flo was more marketable than Diana, looks and voice. Diana is a diva and all but what really makes her a legend is her part in THE SUPREMES who NEVER get credit and deserve a hell of alot more.

LOL
BTW, you spelled his name wrong. People do that a lot because of his accent, but it was Eddie King, Jr. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Even Diana acknowledged it. It would be foolish for her to not believe she made it with two other folks.
