Better Yet what happend to the friggin RB group with instruments! Forget the singing group, i can do without more NEXT and SHAI and MEN OF VIZION wackness. There is nothing wack about Shai (well, their first 3 albums at least). Man for man, they were the best vocal group of the '90s bar none. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

ME, MYSELF, & I.
Those three egos can get all the credit, all the money, and they don't have to share the spotlight wit' nobody. That's what happened to R&B singing groups.

The RnB Band dies about 15 years before the RnB groups.
The last RnB group was (no joke) B2K. Can anyone name a group that came out after them ... PRINCE: Always and Forever

LOL, and Danity Kane, forgot about Diddy's pet projects.
Pretty Ricky was 3 rappers (if that's what you wanna call them) and a singer.
Groups that released albums this past decade.
Temptations O'Jays New Edition Guy Bel Biv DeVoe Boyz II Men Dru Hill 112 Jagged Edge Destiny's Child B2K
I know groups started to die off in the mid 90s just as New Jack Swing was leaving and Gangsta Rap started dominating. You still had your groups emerging like Dru Hill, Total and 112 in 96'; Jagged Edge, Sons of Funk, Blaque and Playa in 97'; Destiny's Child, 3LW in 98; Ideal in 99, ect. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Because some groups KNEW better. I'm sure the Four Tops and Dells had drag-out knockdown fights but got along enough to stay together as long as they did. The Temptations and Supremes were another story.

I was just wondering about this a while back and was talking to another purple hippie about this. I really have no idea what happened to the concept of having a band. I think a long time ago I heard a theory that record companies basically killed "real instruments" in pop music because that's fewer people on the payroll and it's a cheaper means of production in general. I really don't know if R&B bands will make a comeback because I think this overprocessed "music" is really played out. Trolls be gone!

The self-contained urban groups also died , at least as viable recording acts. Many have continued to do the odd tour date here and there: Cameo, Lakeside, The Bar-Kays, Midnight Star, The Ohio Players, Dazz band, etc. Music Royalty in Motion

Joking aside. The death of live music and the club scene in the Black community, had a profound effect, in my opinion.

To be honest, I don't blame her. Even looking at the Supremes when they were cool, Diana was determined to get to the top. I can't hate on that really. Mary and Flo were just ill-prepared to handle that tbh. Who knows with the Temptations though. They were the ones all about unity yet it was easy to separate than stay together.

I actually don't think the R&B band/group has died, it's just that the music industry has gotten so ANAL RETENTIVE lately that most of them are in the underground so you never hear much about them unless some major modern star promotes them.

Instead of breaking up, they should just go all JT on each other:

Never knew that Sam and Dave hated each other. Can anyone point me to a good source for the dish on their relationship?
Loved those guys back in the day and never got that there was any problem between them. All of their songs seemed equally well balanced to me.

I agree about the bands. That is the first thing I thought of when I began reading this article. It is a real tragedy. Without great bands and singing groups, RnB is missing two vital components. Everything can't be solo acts. It was never that way in the past. RnB is the only genre that has a legacy of legendary solo acts, singing groups and bands. Other genres might be legendary solo acts or bands but not all three. And I don't know any other genre that has the list of amazingly gifted singing groups that RnB has had.
As I previously stated, this is a REAL TRAGEDY! perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

R&B kinda died off, at least temporarily...so it makes sense that when it did, so did all the R&B groups. I'd love to see the R&B genre make a return though, I'm ready for something different. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day
