I've been thinking recently about Prince's influence on other artists. I think one of the best Prince-influenced albums of all time is D'Angelo's Voodoo. This is not to say that the artist hasn't got a talent of his/her own, or that he/she doesn't add personal ideas to his/her records. I'm only refering to artists and records in which you can feel Prince's presence in many places.

Which ones are your favourites? (Excluding Prince's associates, but including the ones in which Prince hadn't any involvement at all. If you know what I mean... .)

That's a good but almost unanswerable question.

Rarely if ever is any album made that does not reflect more than one prior influence. And rarely does a listener take in an album without HEARING more than one influence.

HH's choice, The Love Below, is a very good one. But TLB could easily have been the product of multiple influences, not only Prince, but Sly Stone and Funkadelic, et al. I hear other sounds in there as well.

Van Hunt's work is said to be heavily influenced by Prince, not without reason. But Van Hunt credits Curtis Mayfield and Sly Stone as much as Prince, and I hear those influences as well.

If I *had* to pick an album, it would be D'Angelo's Voodoo because it was said that Parade was played during the recording sessions.

The Love Bellow is excellent, although too long in my opinion. I haven´t listened to Van Hunt, I'll have a look.

I agree that it's difficult to answer the question. For example, if one identifies Prince's trademark falsetto in one record, other can say that it actually reminds him of Smokey Robinson...

I have to agree with Musicslave about Ready For the World, a lot of their stuff does sound like 1999-era Prince, even down to how the lead singer ad-libs and stuff.

Out of more recent releases, I'm really eager to hear The Dream's new cd, the influence there is really strong, I love it.

Doesn't that album have more of a Timbaland feel to it? Not saying that you can't hear some Prince influence in it but it's filtered through the Timbaland sound, isn't it?

I haven't listened to this album. Is it that great? I've read that it's not one of her best.

Timb produced it, it should. Although the best song on the record was Damn produced by Wil.I.Am.

Beat me by an hour and a half. Defintitely P influenced bigtime.

My vote goes to Cherokee's Soul Parade.

Not a whole album but two tracks off Bootsy's Play With Bootsy joint from 2004 intimated that P (recording under the pseudonym One) actually played on the tunes, Groove Eternal and Dance to the Music but it turns out it was an imposter.

It fooled me for a while. At first I thought it was really Prince but there was something just a little off about the vocals. I wrote it off to the fact that P was not in charge of the production and the mix so it came out sounding slightly different than his own records.

Later I heard that Bootsy was just bullshitting us. See what y'all think:

it sounds like they used modern equipment to merge the DNA of 1999, Controversy and Dirty Mind. it seems quite intentional too. One riff I remember straight up being stolen, beyond inspiration

It's not one of her best...but U can hear Prince's influence.
