Teena Marie's "Emerald City". Just listen to side 1...tracks like "Once Is Not Enough" "Lips 2 Find U" and the last track on that side "U So Heavy"

I haven't listened to this album. Is it that great? I've read that it's not one of her best.

This CD is AWESOME and it is prince influenced to the hilt I LOVE IT! she never played any of the songs LIVE off this release for what ever reason i don't know.......SHEER FUNK/ROCK/SOUL at it's best!!

The media gave it a bad rep., but I personally think it's a masterpiece. Prince-influenced? Yeah...in the guitar solos I can hear that. "Starchild" and "Naked to the World" had more Prince-ly influenced musical moments than "Emerald City" did, I think. It's especially noticeable in the more "rocked out" tracks. biggrin

Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up.

Right, I mean, if I Want Your Sex, Hard Day, and Monkey aren't Prince inspired then what is?

Funnily enough, when i saw you had posted Faith i decided to give it a spin tonight and the 3 songs you mentioned are the ones that stuck out. Very Prince influenced album.

I've been blasting it for weeks now. cool George even commented that the reason that he hates I Want Your Sex now is because it sounds like "bad Prince" (even though I disagree), and that he tried way too hard to be Prince with this record.

Sade came to mind (for obvious reasons) before Prince did when I heard/hear the album, but I see what you're saying.

I think that's why I hated GM when he dropped this, because he sounded like he was aping Prince's 1980's canon. But however Princely he may have sounded. Faith is a great album on its own merits.

lol He said that he was OBSESSED with Prince. I Want Your Sex, Hard Day, and Monkey, are obvious attempts for a Prince style sound. And look at how much the public ate it up. Prince was doing that stuff in 1982.

I think Maxwell's Now is much more Prince-ly. Michael B even played drums on that album.

How can I stand 2 stay where I am? / Poor butterfly who don't understand.

Their entire debut album has the early 1980's sound.
